Celtic God Name Generator
Irish, Welsh, Gaulish and British gods and goddesses
A reference list of Celtic gods and goddesses from the medieval Irish and Welsh texts, the inscriptions of Gaul and Roman Britain, and classical authors: the Dagda, Lugh, Rhiannon, Cernunnos, Epona and Sulis, bynames such as Nuada Airgetlam and Roman pairings such as Mars Camulos. About 85 of the 500 entries are original names built from attested Celtic elements and are mixed in with the attested ones.
About Celtic god names
There was never one Celtic pantheon. What survives comes from three kinds of evidence. Medieval Irish and Welsh texts, written by Christian scribes, preserve the Tuatha De Danann, their Fomorian rivals and the families of Don and Llyr as characters in stories. Inscriptions from Gaul, Britain and the Rhineland give hundreds of names, many of them known from a single altar. Classical authors add a few more: Lucan names Teutates, Esus and Taranis.
Under Roman rule local gods were paired with Roman ones, which is why the list has Sulis Minerva, Apollo Grannus and Mars Camulos. Such a pairing is a Roman reading of the god and does not settle what the god meant to the people who lived there. Bynames count as entries too, such as Nuada Airgetlam, Lugh Lamfada and Eochaid Ollathair, another name of the Dagda. Grouped deities such as the Matres and the Suleviae appear under their group names.
Each figure has one spelling, with accents left off throughout. Lugh, Lugus and Lleu Llaw Gyffes are separate entries because the Irish, Gaulish and Welsh traditions are distinct. The attested names stop short of 500, so about 85 original names built from attested Gaulish, Irish and Welsh elements fill out the list. Those are for fiction and games, and nobody ever worshipped them.
How to choose Celtic god names
- Check the tradition before you borrow. Irish, Welsh, Gaulish and British figures belong to different places and centuries, so a story set in Roman Gaul fits Sucellus and Rosmerta better than the Dagda.
- Use a byname when you want one face of a god. Lugh Samildanach is Lugh as master of many crafts, and Nuada Airgetlam is Nuada of the silver hand.
- Treat a Roman pairing as a Roman point of view. Mars Lenus was honored as a healer at Trier, so the label Mars does not make a god a war god and nothing else.
- For a deity of your own, start from the original names, such as Nemetomaros or Vindobodua, and leave the attested names to the gods they belong to.
- Several of these figures are honored by pagans today, Brigid and the Morrigan among them. Write about them with the care you would give any living tradition.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the main Celtic gods?
In the Irish texts the best known are the Dagda, Lugh, Brigid, the Morrigan, Nuada and Manannan mac Lir. The Welsh tales give Rhiannon, Arawn, Gwydion, Arianrhod and Bran. From Gaul and Britain come Cernunnos, Epona, Taranis, Belenus and Sulis, who are known mainly from inscriptions and images.
Are all 500 names real Celtic deities?
No. More than four fifths are attested: figures of the Irish and Welsh texts, gods named in inscriptions from Gaul and Britain, and their recorded bynames and Roman pairings. The rest are original names built from attested Celtic elements for fiction and games: Gaulish-style formations with endings such as -ona, -rix, -maros, -vindos, -tarvos and -bodua (Artona, Nemetomaros, Vindobodua, Taranogenos) and a few plain Irish or Welsh phrases such as Tarb Derg and Tarw Gwyn, red bull and white bull. Attested gods share some of those endings, so look a name up in a dictionary of Celtic mythology before you call it historical.
Why do some names include Mars, Apollo or Mercury?
Worshippers in the Roman provinces identified local gods with Roman ones, a habit known as interpretatio Romana. An altar to Mars Camulos or Apollo Grannus records that pairing. It shows how the person who set up the altar understood the god, which may differ from the god's older role.
Were the figures of the Irish and Welsh tales really gods?
The tales were written down by Christian authors, who present the Tuatha De Danann as an ancient people and the Welsh figures as kings, enchanters and their kin. Scholars read many of them as former gods because their names match deities of the inscriptions: Lugh with Lugus, Nuada with Nodens, Mabon ap Modron with Maponus. Human heroes and kings such as Cu Chulainn are left out of this list.
