About egyptian god names

Egypt worshipped for more than three thousand years and never threw a god away, so the pantheon is enormous. Beyond the famous names (Ra, Osiris, Isis, Horus, Set, Anubis, Thoth, Hathor, Bastet, Sekhmet) sit hundreds of local and specialist deities: Meretseger the cobra of the Theban peak, Shezmu of the wine press, Heqet the frog midwife, Mafdet who kills snakes, Renenutet of the granary, and the eight primeval frogs and serpents of Hermopolis. Many names are simply Egyptian words: Ma'at is truth, Nut is sky, Heka is magic, Sia is perception.

Two habits make a name sound properly Egyptian. The first is the epithet: in temple texts a god is almost never a bare name but Ptah South of His Wall, Anubis Upon His Mountain, Isis Great of Magic, Khonsu the Traveller. The second is syncretism, fusing two gods into one with a hyphen when their cults merged or a pharaoh wanted to honour both: Amun-Ra, Ra-Horakhty, Ptah-Sokar-Osiris, Sekhmet-Bastet.

The list also gives the Egyptian forms behind the familiar Greek spellings (Aset for Isis, Wesir for Osiris, Djehuty for Thoth, Inpu for Anubis) and original deities assembled from real roots such as nefer (beautiful), sekhem (power), neb/nebet (lord/lady), hotep (peace) and the feminine -et ending, so an invented god like Sekhen-Wer or Nebet-Het-Tawy sits naturally beside the real ones.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Add an epithet to show the god's job or cult centre: Sobek Lord of the Faiyum, Hathor Lady of Turquoise, Wepwawet Opener of the Ways. It is how Egyptians actually addressed them and it tells the reader the domain instantly.
  • Fuse two gods with a hyphen for a composite deity (Amun-Ra, Sobek-Ra, Hathor-Sekhmet). It signals a merged cult or a god absorbing another's powers, and it is a cheap way to make an original pantheon feel old.
  • Pick one spelling system and stick with it: Greek-derived (Osiris, Isis, Thoth, Anubis) reads familiar; reconstructed Egyptian (Wesir, Aset, Djehuty, Inpu) reads scholarly and archaic.
  • For an invented goddess, end the name in -et or -t (Sekhmet, Bastet, Nebet-Hut) and for a god use endings like -u, -hotep, -amun or -heru; keep vowels few and consonants like kh, dj and tj in play.
  • Remember that animals carry meaning: a jackal god belongs to the dead, a cobra to protection, a ram to creation and fertility, a crocodile to the river, a lioness to war and plague.

Frequently asked questions

Are these real Egyptian gods or invented names?

Most are attested deities, from the great state gods and the Ennead of Heliopolis to obscure local figures like Tutu, Dedun and Nehebkau, plus historical cult epithets and syncretic forms such as Ra-Horakhty and Ptah-Sokar-Osiris. A minority are original names built from genuine Egyptian roots and endings so they blend with the real ones and can be used freely in fiction or games.

Why do some Egyptian gods have several names?

Three reasons. Greek writers gave us the spellings we know (Osiris, Isis, Thoth), while the Egyptian forms are Wesir, Aset and Djehuty. Gods were also addressed by epithets tied to a place or role, so Horus of Edfu, Horus the Elder and Horus the Child are different aspects. Finally, cults merged over time, creating combined gods like Amun-Ra and Sekhmet-Bastet.

Which Egyptian goddesses are included?

All the major ones: Isis, Hathor, Bastet, Sekhmet, Nut, Ma'at, Nephthys, Neith, Mut, Tefnut, Wadjet, Nekhbet, Serqet, Taweret, Seshat and Satet, plus less familiar goddesses such as Meretseger, Renenutet, Heqet, Pakhet, Mafdet, Anuket, Sopdet, Menhit, Hesat, Iusaaset and Werethekau, along with their epithets.

Can I use these names for a fantasy or D&D pantheon?

Yes. The original names are free to use, and the epithet and hyphen patterns let you build your own. For a desert or river-kingdom setting, borrow the structure rather than the exact gods: give each deity an animal, a cult city and a title, and merge two of them into a composite state god to suggest a long history of shifting religion.
