Generate romance novel character names that fit the trope: small-town sweethearts, billionaires, hockey players, cowboys, Regency lords and ladies, paranormal alphas, romantasy princes and rom-com leads, plus ready-made couple pairings. Built for romance writers, fanfic authors and anyone casting a love story.

About romance character names

Romance readers decide a lot about a character from the name alone, and the genre has quietly developed its own conventions. Contemporary heroes tend to get one- or two-syllable names with a hard consonant (Beckett, Graham, Rhys, Nash, Cole) and a surname that could be a small town or a law firm (Callahan, Whitlock, Sutherland). Heroines get names that are warm but slightly unusual so they feel like a real person rather than a placeholder: Hazel, Wren, Margot, Sloane, Josie, Clementine. The two names also need to sound good together in a single line of dialogue, because readers will hear them side by side for 300 pages.

Subgenre shifts the register. Billionaire and CEO romance likes polished, old-money names (Sterling Hayes, Grayson Ashford, Charlotte Montgomery). Sports romance wants unisex, jersey-ready names (Jax, Logan, Riley, Bailey). Cowboy romance reaches for Western place-and-grit names (Laramie, Waylon, Savannah, Delta Mae). Regency needs a title and an English estate surname (Lady Arabella Wyndham, Viscount Julian Harcourt). Paranormal and romantasy lean on darker, more liquid sounds (Lucian Draven, Seraphina Nightingale, Kael Stormwright, Elowen Starling).

The list covers all of those, includes heroes and heroines from a wide range of cultures, and adds paired couples you can lift straight into a blurb.

How to choose romance character names

  • Say the hero's and heroine's names together out loud. They should differ in first letter, syllable count or stress (Beckett and Hazel, Theo and June) so they never blur in dialogue or in a dual-POV chapter header.
  • Give the heroine a name that can be shortened or lengthened. Josephine becomes Josie only to her family; the hero using the full name is a cheap, effective intimacy beat.
  • Match the surname to the setting. A small-town romance needs a surname that could be on the hardware store sign; a billionaire romance needs one that could be on a building.
  • Keep secondary characters' names in a different lane from the leads. If the hero is Cole, do not name his best friend Cade or his brother Colt.
  • Check the name against current bestseller lists in your subgenre. Readers notice when a new hockey hero shares a name with last year's breakout, and reviewers will mention it.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good romance hero name?

Short, strong and easy to say: one or two syllables with a hard consonant (Beckett, Rhys, Nash, Graham, Cole) and a surname with a bit of weight (Whitlock, Sutherland, Kincaid). The subgenre sets the flavor: old-money names for billionaires, Western names for cowboys, titles and estates for Regency, darker sounds for paranormal and romantasy.

What are good romance heroine names?

Warm, slightly distinctive names that feel like a real woman rather than a placeholder: Hazel, Wren, Margot, Sloane, Josie, Clementine, Maren, Poppy, Tessa. For historical romance use period-appropriate names (Arabella, Georgiana, Honoria); for romantasy use softer, more lyrical ones (Elowen, Seraphine, Isolde, Aurelia).

Does the generator include names from different cultures?

Yes. Alongside Anglo-American names you will find Latin American, South Asian, Korean, Japanese, Black American, West African, Arab, Persian, Irish, Scottish, Italian, French, Scandinavian and Eastern European heroes and heroines, so you can cast a diverse contemporary romance or a culture-specific one.

Can I use these names in a published romance novel?

Yes. They are ordinary given names and surnames, and the titled Regency names are invented. It is still worth searching your subgenre on Amazon and Goodreads to avoid sharing a lead's name with a well-known recent release.
