Generate blue dragon names with the right crackle: guttural Draconic true names, desert and lightning epithets like Sandscourge and the Cloudless Tyrant, Warcraft-style blue dragonflight names, and canon dragons such as Iymrith and Malygos. For D&D, Pathfinder, WoW and original fantasy.

About blue dragon names

Blue dragons are the desert tyrants of the chromatic family. In Dungeons & Dragons they breathe lightning, burrow under dunes to ambush caravans, and run their territories like vain, meticulous kings; Iymrith of Anauroch and Lennithon are the famous examples. Their true names follow the Draconic template that all true dragons share: long, guttural words heavy on k, x, z, th and rolled r, usually four or five syllables, such as Vraxilith, Kaldrassar or Zarkhendros. Blue names tend to carry more hissing sibilants and sharp vowels than red or black ones, which reads as ozone and glass rather than fire and rot.

Most blue dragons also have an epithet the locals use, and that is where the colour shows. Reach for lightning, thunder, sand, glass (what a lightning strike makes of a dune), mirage, sapphire and the cloudless sky: Sandscourge, the Glass-Maker, the Cloudless Tyrant, Storm of the Dunes. In World of Warcraft the blue dragonflight uses a different convention entirely, with names ending in -gos for males and -gosa for females (Malygos, Kalecgos, Sindragosa), so a few of those are here too.

The list mixes full Draconic true names, name-plus-epithet forms, short epithets, dovah-style compounds, softer names for female wyrms and the canon blues, so you can pick a stat-block name and one the caravan guards actually use.

How to choose blue dragon names

  • Give the dragon two names: a Draconic true name for the stat block (Zarkhendros) and an epithet the locals use (the Glass-Maker), then let the players discover the true name as a plot point.
  • Choose imagery that is specifically blue: lightning, thunder, ozone, fulgurite glass, dunes, mirages, sapphire and cloudless sky, rather than generic dragon words like fire or shadow.
  • For World of Warcraft, keep the dragonflight convention: -gos for males (Kalecgos) and -gosa for females (Sindragosa), and avoid mixing in D&D-style epithets.
  • Say it with a hiss and a growl; blue names should crackle, so favour z, x, ss and kh over soft l and m sounds.
  • For a blue dragon's lair or kingdom, name the place after the dragon's epithet (the Glass Flats, Thunder Mesa) so the whole region feels owned.

Frequently asked questions

What are some famous blue dragon names?

In D&D, Iymrith the Doom of the Desert (Storm King's Thunder), Lennithon (Hoard of the Dragon Queen), Olothontor the Minstrel Wyrm and the dracolich Alasklerbanbastos. In World of Warcraft the blue dragonflight includes Malygos, Kalecgos, Sindragosa and Azuregos, and Saphira from Eragon is the best-known blue dragon in fiction.

How do blue dragon names differ from other chromatic dragons?

The underlying Draconic sound is the same, but blue names lean on sharp, hissing consonants and lightning, sand and sky imagery in their epithets, whereas reds favour fire and pride, blacks favour rot and acid, and whites favour ice.

Do blue dragons have male and female names?

In D&D the names are not strongly gendered, though writers often give female dragons softer endings (-ith, -ra, -essa). In Warcraft the convention is explicit: -gos for males and -gosa for females, which is why this generator includes both forms.

Can I use these names in a published adventure?

The original names and epithets are free to use. Canon names like Iymrith, Lennithon, Malygos and Saphira belong to Wizards of the Coast, Blizzard and Christopher Paolini respectively, so keep those to home games and fan work.
