White Dragon Name Generator

White dragons are the smallest, most feral and least intelligent of the chromatic dragons in Dungeons & Dragons, and their names reflect that. Where a gold dragon carries a name of stately syllables and a blue dragon a name of thunder, a white dragon's true name in Draconic tends to be long, harsh and full of sibilants and hard stops: Arauthator, Arveiaturace, Icasaracht, Ingeloakastimizilian. Those true names are so unwieldy that the humanoids who fear the dragon almost always know it by an epithet instead. Ingeloakastimizilian became Icingdeath to Drizzt and the folk of Icewind Dale, Arauthator is Old White Death, and Glazhael is the Cloudchaser.

That gives you two layers to work with. The true name should sound like a growl in a frozen cave, three to six syllables, heavy on r, th, k, z and x, and it should not obviously spell out an English word. The epithet should be short, brutal and rooted in what the dragon does to the people below it: White Death, the Frost Wyrm, the Bane of Ten Towns. Many groups also give a white dragon a plainer descriptive name for wyrmlings, familiars or dragon companions, such as Rimefang, Snowdrift or Bergwing, and pull from cold mythology and languages for a more elegant ice dragon: Skadi and Ymir from Norse myth, Khione from Greek, Morozko from Slavic folklore, Yuki and Koori from Japanese.

When naming a white dragon for a campaign, remember its personality: vengeful, territorial, a superb hunter with a long memory. Its name should feel old and cold rather than sparkly or regal, and the epithet is what your players will actually say at the table.
