About bacteria names

Bacterial names follow the same binomial system Linnaeus gave to plants and animals: a capitalized genus (Escherichia) followed by a lowercase species epithet (coli), both italicized in print. The genus often honors a discoverer (Escherich, Lister, Yersin, Legionella after the 1976 Legionnaires' convention) or describes shape and arrangement in Greek and Latin: strepto- means chain, staphylo- means grape cluster, -coccus is a sphere, -bacillus a rod, vibrio a comma-shaped curve. The species epithet then adds habitat, host, colour, or disease: coli lives in the colon, aureus forms golden colonies, pneumoniae causes pneumonia, radiodurans survives radiation.

  • Match the name to the biology: -coccus for spherical bacteria, -bacillus or -bacter for rods, -spira or -spirillum for spirals, -monas for single motile cells.
  • Avoid famous pathogens if your story needs mystery; readers know Yersinia pestis, but Photorhabdus luminescens or Sorangium cellulosum sound new and still real.
  • Check current taxonomy before citing in academic work, since names change (Propionibacterium acnes is now Cutibacterium acnes; Clostridium difficile is Clostridioides difficile).
