Generate virus names built the way virologists build them, from real pathogens like Nipah virus and SARS-CoV-2 to invented ones such as Kestrel Point virus and Ironvale encephalitis virus. Useful for outbreak fiction, tabletop campaigns, and biology classwork.

About virus names

Virus names follow patterns you can learn in about a minute, and once you see them, invented names become easy to build. The largest group is geographic: Ebola takes its name from a river, Marburg from a German university town, Lassa from a Nigerian village, Hendra from a suburb of Brisbane, and Sin Nombre literally means "no name" because researchers could not agree on a place. Add "fever virus" or "encephalitis virus" to a plausible toponym and you have something that reads as real, which is exactly how Kestrel Point virus and Ironvale encephalitis virus work.

The second pattern is descriptive. Respiratory syncytial virus, foot-and-mouth disease virus, and vesicular stomatitis virus all name the tissue or the symptom. The third is acronymic and increasingly dominant, because the WHO now discourages place-based names: SARS-CoV-2, MERS-CoV, HIV. Formal taxonomy sits above all of this, with families ending in -viridae and genera in -virus, so Ebola virus belongs to Filoviridae.

Capitalization trips people up. Only the proper-noun part is capitalized, so it is Ebola virus and Zika virus with a lowercase v, but Cytomegalovirus stands alone as one word.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Choose a naming style that matches who names it in your story. Scientists reach for acronyms and Latin, field teams reach for place names, and the public invents something short and vivid.
  • Avoid inventing a virus named after a real town, country, or people. Public health agencies abandoned that practice in 2015 precisely because of the harm it caused.
  • Name the virus and the disease separately if realism matters. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus and COVID-19 is the illness, and keeping the two distinct is a detail readers with science backgrounds notice.
  • Add a body-system word like encephalitis, hemorrhagic fever, or respiratory to tell readers what the virus actually does without a paragraph of explanation.
  • Keep the lowercase v when you follow a proper noun, as in Nipah virus, since capitalizing it is the most common giveaway of writing that has not checked the convention.

Frequently asked questions

How are viruses named in real life?

Most are named for where the first outbreak occurred, for the symptoms they cause, or with an acronym describing the illness. Formal taxonomy is set by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses, which assigns family names ending in -viridae and genus names ending in -virus.

Why did the WHO stop using place names for new viruses?

Because names like Spanish flu and Middle East respiratory syndrome stigmatized regions and industries without adding scientific value. Since 2015 the guidance has been to use neutral descriptive terms and generic descriptors instead.

Is a virus name capitalized?

Only the proper-noun portion is. Write Ebola virus, Zika virus, and Nipah virus with a lowercase v, and reserve capitals for formal taxonomic names such as Filoviridae and single-word names like Cytomegalovirus.

Can I use these virus names in a published book or game?

Yes. The real virus names are factual and free to reference, and the invented ones carry no restrictions, though a quick search is wise before you build a whole story around a favorite.
