Real viruses get their names from a handful of places, and every one of them is worth stealing for fiction. - Avoid naming a fictional virus after a real country, city, or ethnic group. It reads as dated at best and offensive at worst, and public health agencies stopped doing it for that reason.
- Match the name's syllables to the tone. Two-syllable names feel like fast, brutal outbreaks; long clinical syndrome titles feel like a slow institutional horror.
- If the virus is engineered, use a codename with a container prefix like Agent, Vector, or Isolate, plus a birdname or color, and never explain what it stands for.
