About medication names
Real medications carry two names, and a convincing fictional one should hint at both. The brand name is the polished, trademarkable word you see in television ads: Lipitor, Xanax, Ozempic. Marketers love the letters X, Z, V and Q because they are rare in everyday English, feel high-tech, and are easy to trademark. Two or three syllables, a strong stressed vowel, and a soft ending like -a, -ex, or -ant give a name that sounds like it was approved by a naming agency, not scribbled on a napkin.
The generic (INN) name is different. It is built from stems that tell pharmacists what the drug does: -pril for ACE inhibitors, -statin for cholesterol drugs, -olol for beta blockers, -sartan for blood-pressure blockers, -mab for monoclonal antibodies, -tinib for kinase inhibitors, -cillin and -oxacin for antibiotics, -vir for antivirals, -zepam for benzodiazepines. Attach a made-up prefix to a real stem and you get a name like Veltrapril or Cabrizumab that reads as authentic to anyone in scrubs.
The list above mixes both styles, plus a few extended-release variants (XR, ER, Forte) that make prop packaging and prescription scenes feel real. Every entry is invented, so it is safe to drop into a script, novel, or game without colliding with a real product's trademark, though a quick search before commercial use is always wise.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pair a brand name with a generic in dialogue the way clinicians do: "Start her on Cardivex, that's the lorvasartan" instantly sounds credible.
- Match the stem to the plot: a heart drug should end in -pril, -olol or -sartan, an antibiotic in -cillin or -mycin, a cancer drug in -mab or -tinib.
- Add a dosage and route for prop labels ("Zephrexa XR 40 mg, once daily") but keep the name itself to three syllables or fewer.
- For dystopian or sci-fi settings, drop the vowel-heavy softness and use harder consonants and numbers, e.g. Anxiolyt-7, to signal something colder.
- Say the name out loud in a sentence; if you stumble on it, a nurse in your story would too, so simplify.
Frequently asked questions
How are real medication names created?
Generic names are assigned by the WHO's International Nonproprietary Names program using class-specific stems, while brand names are invented by naming agencies and must be approved by regulators such as the FDA to avoid confusion with existing drugs.
Are these names real drugs?
No. Every name here is fictional and built to imitate real pharmaceutical naming patterns. A few may resemble real products by coincidence, so run a trademark search before using one on a commercial product.
Why do so many drug names start with X or Z?
Letters like X, Z, V and Q are uncommon in ordinary English words, which makes names built on them memorable, distinctive, and far easier to register as trademarks.
Can I use these medication names in a published book, film or game?
Yes. The names are free to use in creative work. If a name will appear on a real product or packaging, check trademark databases first, and never present a fictional drug as genuine medical advice.
