Animal Species Name Generator

Real animal species names follow surprisingly consistent patterns, and borrowing them is the quickest way to make an invented creature feel like it belongs in a field guide. Common names usually stack a descriptor, a habitat, and a base animal: Rufous-crowned Marsh Kingfisher, Lesser Dusk Vole, Banded Fen Otter. The descriptor is often a color or body feature (ash-throated, long-tailed, spectacled), the habitat tells you where it lives (reef, karst, tundra, mangrove), and comparative words like Greater, Lesser, Common, Dwarf, Northern and Southern signal that it belongs to a family of similar animals.

Scientific names are two-part Latin binomials: a capitalized genus and a lowercase species epithet, conventionally written in italics. The epithet is usually descriptive (nivalis for snowy, palustris for marsh-dwelling, velox for swift), geographic (borealis, australis, insularis) or honors a person. The names above pair real genera such as Vulpes, Strix and Salmo with plausible new epithets so they read like undescribed species rather than gibberish.

When inventing a species for a novel, RPG bestiary, or worldbuilding project, decide first whether it is a subspecies of something familiar or something wholly new. Familiar animals with a twist (a Two-toed Swamp Sloth) sound authentic; entirely alien creatures need a base noun the reader can picture, even if it is loosely applied.
