Generate Al-Qadim names for characters in Zakhara, the Land of Fate: city folk like Jamila bint Rashid al-Huzuzi, desert riders like Sheikh Mubarak of House Rimal and mamluks like Sunqur al-Qudri the Dauntless, plus sha'irs and their gens, corsairs, holy slayers, sultans and genies of the four kinds.

About Al-Qadim names

Al-Qadim is the Arabian Nights setting of Dungeons & Dragons: Zakhara, the Land of Fate, a land of pearl ports, caravan cities and open desert. A Zakharan name is built in parts. The given name comes first, then a parent's name after ibn or bin (son of) or bint (daughter of), then a tag that says where the person belongs. For city dwellers that tag is a nisba, an adjective made from the city: al-Huzuzi is a man of Huzuz, al-Huzuziyya a woman. Abu and Umm, father of and mother of, give parents their everyday names.

Other tags name a calling or a loyalty. Desert riders carry their house, mamluks the society that trained them, such as the Dauntless or the Valiant, and holy slayers a fellowship such as the Everlasting or the Soft Whisper. Sha'irs keep small genie servants called gens, and the great genies come in four kinds: djinn of the air, dao of the earth, efreet of fire and marids of the sea.

The list mixes fifteen groups, from the folk of Huzuz and Hiyal to corsairs, barbers, rawuns and sultans. The cities, seas, societies and fellowships are drawn from the setting; the people and the genies are original, made for your own table.

How to choose Al-Qadim names

  • Start with where the character belongs. For a city dweller, take the city and add -i for a man or -iyya for a woman: Basim al-Huzuzi, Salma al-Hiyaliyya. Where the nisba is clumsy, 'of' does the same job, as in Manal of Halwa.
  • Add a parent with ibn or bint when lineage matters in the scene. Dawud ibn Sabir al-Huzuzi gives the full name to a qadi and plain Dawud to his friends, so one entry covers both.
  • Name a desert house before its riders. Pick the house, then hang the family on it: Sheikh Mubarak of House Rimal, then Nura bint Mubarak of House Rimal.
  • Name a sha'ir and the gen together, and give the gen a small word. Sharar the Efreetikin is a spark, Qatra the Maridan a drop, Nasim the Djinnling a breeze and Hasat the Daolani a pebble.
  • The mamluks here carry Turkic and Persian given names, a choice of this list that sets them apart from the city folk. Swap in any name you like: the society is what marks a mamluk, as in Mamluk Arslan of the Dauntless.

Frequently asked questions

How are Al-Qadim names put together?

A given name, a parent's name after ibn or bint, and a tag for city, house or calling, often with an epithet at the end. Jamila bint Rashid al-Huzuzi is a woman of Huzuz, Faris ibn Tariq of the House of Rimal is a desert rider, and Sunqur al-Qudri the Dauntless is a mamluk of Qudra. Few people use every part at once, so shorten freely.

Are these names from the Al-Qadim books?

The places, the seas, the mamluk societies, the holy slayer fellowships and the gods in the priests' titles come from the setting, and so do a few desert houses such as the House of Nasr. The people and the genies are original names in the same manner, and other houses, such as House Rimal and House Sarab, are made up for this list. This is a fan page with no connection to the publisher of the game.

How do I name a genie in Zakhara?

Decide the kind first: djinn of the air, dao of the earth, efreet of fire or marid of the sea. The genie names here are built from Arabic words for wind and weather, stone and metal, fire and smoke, sea and tide, such as Zafzaf the Djinni, Jalmud the Dao, Waqqad the Efreeti and Mawj the Marid. Nobles add a court title, as in Vizier Ghaym al-Sahab of the Djinn or Pasha Lahab of the Efreet.

Which names suit rogues and street characters?

Look for the callings. Barbers are the gossips and bone-setters of every suq, as in Hakim the Barber of Hiyal, and the list also has beggar-thieves like Little Asfur the Beggar-Thief, sa'luks like Sa'luk Sabbaq the Fleet and merchant-rogues like Merchant-Rogue Habib of Tajar. Corsairs carry a sea or a port instead, such as Captain Nasir of the Crowded Sea.
