Dark Sun Name Generator
Harsh names for the dying world of Athas
Generate Dark Sun names for characters and places on Athas: blunt commoner names like Dask and Tolla, arena bynames like Karsk the Last Standing, nobles like Jarran of Vordicles, sorcerer-king names like Urumesh the Undying, plus templars, elf tribes and desert oases.
About Dark Sun names
Dark Sun is the Dungeons & Dragons setting of Athas, a desert world burned out by defiling magic, where there are no gods, metal is scarce and the city-states answer to immortal sorcerer-kings. Names follow rank. Commoners, slaves and freed folk get one short blunt word, the way the novels name Rikus, Neeva and Sadira, and the bulk of this list is built on that sound: Dask, Tolla, Harsk, Mirra. A trade or a place does the work of a surname, as in Nurn the Potter or Zurl of the Warrens.
Above them, a name carries what its owner belongs to. Gladiators earn a byname in the arena, nobles carry their estate on the model of Agis of Asticles, merchant agents carry their house and templars carry their office. At the top the names turn long and strange: Kalak, Hamanu and Lalali-Puy sit in the list as style anchors beside original names in the same manner, such as Illimaketh the Thousand-Year King.
The list mixes ten groups: commoners, gladiators, nobles and merchant houses, templars, sorcerer-kings, muls and dwarves, elf runners with their tribes, halflings of the Forest Ridge, preservers, defilers and masters of the Way, and villages, oases and ruins. Apart from a small share of well-known names from the setting, everything is original.
How to choose Dark Sun names
- Start from station. A laborer or slave gets one short word such as Kesh or Orsa; add a trade or a place only when the character has earned one, as in Tulk the Caravan Loader or Jurn of the Clay Pits.
- Let the crowd name your gladiator. Arena bynames describe what the stands saw, like Karsk the Last Standing, Vessa Two-Spears or Sarra Never-Knelt, and a freed fighter usually keeps the byname.
- For a noble, put the estate after 'of' (Jarran of Vordicles, Lady Tirra of the Walled Spring). For a merchant, name the house first, then hang agents on it: House Orvath, then Caravan Master Belk of House Orvath.
- Athas has no gods, so skip priests of named deities. Authority comes from a sorcerer-king's templars (Templar Orra of the Games), from hidden preservers and feared defilers, and from masters of the Way such as Sennik Thoughtwalker.
- Name an elf's tribe before the elf. Pick a tribe from wind, night or sky, such as The Dusk Striders, then attach runners to it: Saelaryn of the Dusk Striders.
Frequently asked questions
What do Dark Sun names sound like?
Short, dry and hard for ordinary people, and long and imperious for rulers. A brick maker or field hand is Dask, Tolla or Bruk, while a sorcerer-king is Sabbaru-Ket, Mother of the City or Urumesh the Undying. Bynames, estates, houses and offices do the job that surnames do in other settings.
Are these names from the Dark Sun books?
A small share are well-known names from the setting, such as Rikus, Neeva, Sadira, Kalak, Hamanu and the city of Tyr, and they are there as style anchors. The rest are original names in the same manner for your own characters and places. This is a fan page with no connection to the publisher of the game.
How do I name a sorcerer-king or sorcerer-queen?
Use three or four syllables, an unusual consonant or a hyphen, and a title that sounds like a boast: Oronokh, Lord of the Last Well, Queen Sellavi-Dru or Ommu-Shai. Then name the officials who serve the ruler, such as High Templar Vessik or Keeper of the Water Rolls Durrin, so the city feels governed.
Does the list include thri-kreen and half-giants?
Only a few of each, such as Zk'krix and Hroog the Half-Giant, because both peoples have their own pages on this site. Most of the list is human commoners, gladiators, nobles and templars, with muls, dwarves, elves and halflings as smaller groups.
