Greyhawk Name Generator
Oeridian, Suel, Flan and Baklunish names for Oerth
Generate names for D&D's World of Greyhawk: Oeridian nobles of Furyondy and the Great Kingdom, pale Suel of Keoland and the Scarlet Brotherhood, Flan folk of Tenh and Geoff, Baklunish of Ket and Zeif, plus canon figures like Mordenkainen and Iuz and the cities and regions of the Flanaess.
About Greyhawk names
Greyhawk names work best when you know which of the Flanaess's human peoples a character comes from. Oeridians, the founders of the Great Kingdom, Furyondy and Nyrond, carry clipped Germanic-sounding names and surnames that often double as noble houses (Ivid Naelax, Belvor, Jallarzi Sallavarian, the Cranden and Garasteth lines). The Suel of Keoland, the Scarlet Brotherhood and the northern barbarian kingdoms prefer Latin-flavored forms such as Slerotin, Kevelli Mauk, Korenth Zan and Sevvord Redbeard, with house names like Neheli, Rhola and Linth. Flan names, native to Oerth and strongest in Tenh, Geoff and the Rovers of the Barrens, are softer and often Celtic in feel, sometimes with a descriptive epithet like Durishi Great Hound. Baklunish names from Ket, Ekbir, Tusmit and Zeif draw on Persian and Arabic sounds: Xargun, Muammar Qharan, Beygraf Zoltan.
The setting's most famous names belong to Gary Gygax's original campaign: Mordenkainen, Bigby, Tenser, Otiluke, Rary and the rest of the Circle of Eight, plus villains like Iuz, Iggwilv, Vecna and Acererak. Many are player names spelled backwards or tweaked, which is why Drawmij sounds the way it does.
This generator mixes canon figures and places with original names built on each culture's conventions, so you can drop a new Nyrondese knight, Ketite merchant or Scarlet Brother into a game without breaking the feel of Oerth.
How to choose Greyhawk names
- Pick the culture before the name: Oeridian for Furyondy, Nyrond, Urnst and the Great Kingdom; Suel for Keoland, the Sea Princes, the Scarlet Brotherhood and the Thillonrian barbarians; Flan for Tenh, Geoff and the Rovers; Baklunish for Ket, Ekbir, Tusmit, Zeif and the Paynims.
- Give Oeridian nobles a house name (Cranden, Naelax, Garasteth, Torquann, Rax, Darmen for Aerdy; Neheli, Rhola and Linth for Keoish Suel) so other characters can place them politically at once.
- Scarlet Brotherhood agents use a rank plus a Suel name (Brother, Sister, Father, Elder Brother); Baklunish rulers use Caliph, Sultan, Pasha or Beygraf depending on the state.
- In the Gygax tradition, reverse or scramble a player's real name for an archmage NPC, as Drawmij and Zagig were; it fits Greyhawk's tone better than a grand invented title.
- Northern Suel barbarians of the Fruztii, Schnai and Cruski take Norse-style names with patronymics and epithets (Hundgred Ralffson, Sevvord Redbeard), not the Latin forms of southern Suel.
Frequently asked questions
What are the main human cultures in Greyhawk and how do their names differ?
The Flanaess has five: Oeridian (Germanic-sounding, e.g. Belvor, Ivid, Sallavarian), Suel (Latin-flavored, e.g. Slerotin, Korenth Zan, Neheli), Flan (softer, often Celtic-feeling, e.g. Ehyeh, Owen of Geoff), Baklunish (Persian and Arabic sounds, e.g. Xargun, Beygraf Zoltan) and the Rhennee barge folk with Romani-like names. Olman and Touv peoples live in the southern jungles.
Who are the most famous Greyhawk characters?
The Circle of Eight (Mordenkainen, Bigby, Tenser, Otiluke, Rary, Drawmij, Nystul, Otto and Jallarzi Sallavarian), the heroes Robilar, Riggby, Yrag and Murlynd, the mad archmage Zagig, and villains Iuz, Iggwilv, Vecna, Kas, Acererak and the Scarlet Brotherhood's Korenth Zan. Many D&D spells still carry these names.
How do I name a city or region so it fits the Flanaess?
Canon places are short and blunt (Nulb, Stoink, Knurl, Scant, Fax) or compound and Oeridian (Rel Mord, Rel Astra, Chendl, Critwall), with Baklunish cities sounding Persian (Lopolla, Sefmur, Zeir-i-Zeif). Aim for one or two syllables for villages and a harder, older-sounding name for Aerdy or Keoish cities.
Can I use these names in my own Greyhawk campaign or published adventure?
Canon names belong to Wizards of the Coast and are included for reference; they are fine at your own table. The original names here are free to use in home games, fiction and third-party material.
