About Zimbabwean last names

Many of the most widespread surnames in Zimbabwe are totem names. A totem, mutupo in Shona, is the animal or emblem a clan is identified with, and it often became the written family name: Shumba is lion, Ndlovu is elephant, Hove is fish, Nyoni is bird and Mpofu is eland. Names such as Moyo, Dube, Ncube and Sibanda are carried by Shona, Ndebele and Kalanga families alike, so a totem surname on its own does not tell you which language a family speaks.

The 500 surnames here come one per entry and without labels. Beside the totem names there are Shona family names, many of them opening with Chi-, Mu-, Ma- or Nya- (Chitando, Mutasa, Makoni, Nyandoro) and others such as Zvobgo, Takawira and Parirenyatwa. There are Ndebele and other Nguni clan names from the west and southwest (Khumalo, Mkhwananzi, Masuku, Ndiweni), and a smaller number from Kalanga, Tonga, Venda and Shangaan families (Nleya, Mudenda, Mbedzi, Chauke). A few, such as Banda, Phiri and Mwale, belong to families of Malawian and Zambian origin who have lived in Zimbabwe for generations.

Each name appears in one spelling. Older records write some of them differently, Ndlovu as Ndhlovu or Sithole as Sitole, so choose one form and keep it.

How to choose Zimbabwean last names

  • Put a given name in front. Zimbabweans commonly carry a Shona or Ndebele first name, an English one, or both, so Tendai Mutasa, Nomsa Khumalo and Blessing Chitando all read naturally.
  • Do not use a totem surname to place a character. Moyo, Dube, Ncube and Sibanda are shared across Shona, Ndebele and Kalanga families, and people move between Harare, Bulawayo and everywhere else.
  • Learn the Ndebele spellings before you read them aloud. Tsh is close to the English ch in Tshuma and Tshabangu, and kh, th and ph are k, t and p with a puff of air, so Mathe and Maphosa have no English th or f sound.
  • Keep one spelling per family. If you pick Ndlovu, Sithole or Dhliwayo for a character, write it the same way for every relative in the story.
  • Remember that in Shona custom people who share a totem are regarded as kin. Two strangers named Shumba or Hove meeting for the first time is a detail a story can use.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common Zimbabwean surnames?

Moyo, Ncube, Sibanda, Dube, Ndlovu, Mpofu and Nyathi are among the most widespread, and all of them are in this list. The page does not rank names by how common they are, so a reroll mixes well-known names with rarer ones such as Parirenyatwa, Dangarembga and Hlabangana.

What is a totem surname?

A totem is the animal or emblem that identifies a clan, and in Zimbabwe it was often recorded as the family name. Shumba means lion, Ndlovu elephant, Hove fish, Nyoni bird and Mpofu eland. Because clans are older than modern language borders, the same totem name can belong to Shona, Ndebele and Kalanga families.

How do Shona and Ndebele surnames differ?

Shona family names are often long and many open with Chi-, Mu-, Ma- or Nya-, as in Chikowore, Muzenda, Mapfumo and Nyagumbo. Ndebele is a Nguni language close to Zulu, so its clan names, such as Khumalo, Dlamini and Gumede, are also heard in South Africa. The totem names sit between the two and are shared.

Why are Banda and Phiri in a Zimbabwean list?

Both names come from Malawi and Zambia, and many Zimbabwean families who carry them descend from people who came to work on the farms and mines several generations ago. They are now ordinary Zimbabwean surnames, along with Mwale and Mbewe. The list keeps this group small.
