About African last names
Africa has more than fifty countries and well over a thousand languages, so there is no single African surname tradition. Knowing where a name comes from is what makes it useful. Yoruba surnames are short sentences: Adeyemi and Adebayo open with ade, the crown, while Ogunleye honors Ogun, the deity of iron. Igbo names such as Okafor, Okeke and Okonkwo record the market day on which a boy was born, and among the Akan of Ghana, Mensah marks a third-born son.
Spelling often shows which colonial language a family writes in. The Fula name written Diallo in French-speaking Senegal, Guinea and Mali is Jallow in The Gambia, and Cissé, Touré and Ndiaye become Ceesay, Touray and Njie. In southern Africa many surnames are clan names that double as animal names: Ndlovu is elephant, Ngwenya crocodile, Nyathi buffalo and Dube zebra. Shona totems work the same way, with Shumba for lion and Hove for fish.
Not every name here is inherited. In Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia the second name is the father's given name, so Tesfaye or Warsame changes with each generation. Many Kalenjin names from Kenya begin with Kip for men and Chep or Jep for women, and Luo names such as Otieno (born at night) and Okoth (born in the rains) describe the birth itself.
How to choose African last names
- Match the surname to the given name. Okafor belongs with an Igbo first name and Kamau with a Kikuyu one, so pick the people first and then choose both names from that tradition.
- Use the spelling of the country. The same Fula family name is Diallo in Dakar or Conakry, Jallow in Banjul and Jalloh in Freetown, and French accents stay on names such as Traoré and Cissé.
- For Ethiopian, Eritrean and Somali characters, remember the last name is a patronymic. Brothers and sisters share it, a father and his children do not, and women keep theirs after marriage.
- Some names are gendered. Kalenjin names such as Kiprop and Kiplagat belong to men, while Chepkoech and Jepkosgei are women's names, so check before you assign one.
- Say the name aloud before you commit. Letter pairs such as Ng, Mb and Kp are pronounced together at the start of a word, and the X in Xhosa names such as Xuma is a click.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real African surnames?
Yes. The list is built from family names, clan names and patronymics in use across Africa today, such as Okafor, Mensah, Diallo, Tesfaye, Kamau and Nkosi. It is a starting point for fiction, games and research, so look up any name you plan to use for something important.
How can I tell which country a surname comes from?
The list mixes every region, so look at the shape of the name. Names that open with Ade, Ogun or Ola are Yoruba and names that open with Nw are Igbo, both from Nigeria, while Owusu, Boateng and Asante are Akan names from Ghana. Ndiaye and Diop are Wolof names from Senegal, Kamau and Njoroge are Kikuyu names from Kenya, and Nkosi, Khumalo and Mkhize are Zulu names from South Africa.
Why do some African last names change every generation?
Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia do not use fixed family names. A child takes the father's given name as a second name, so the daughter of a man named Bekele Tesfaye carries Bekele, not Tesfaye. In Rwanda and Burundi each child traditionally receives an individual name such as Niyonzima or Uwimana in place of a shared family name.
Does the list include Afrikaans or Portuguese surnames?
No. It includes North African family names from Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt such as Bennani, Mokrani and Mahfouz, but European surnames that are common in parts of Africa are left out. For Afrikaans names or the Portuguese surnames of Angola and Mozambique, try the South African and Angolan name generators.
