About Ghanaian last names

A Ghanaian surname usually points to one of the country's peoples, so most entries carry a label. Akan, the largest share, covers Asante, Akyem, Akuapem, Bono and Kwahu families with names such as Owusu, Boateng, Osei and Appiah. The Fante and Nzema of the coast are Akan peoples whose surnames look different (Quansah, Ghartey, Yankey), so they keep their own label. Ewe surnames from the Volta Region often open with Agbe-, Ame- or Dz-: Agbeko, Amegashie, Dzokoto. Ga families of Accra give Lamptey, Quartey and Nortey, the Dangme give Narh and Puplampu, and the north adds Dagomba, Gonja, Frafra, Kusasi and Dagaaba names like Ziblim, Jinapor, Adongo and Tengan.

Some names carry no label. Mensah, Adjei and Tetteh are borne by families of more than one people, northern families often use a Muslim given name such as Mahama or Iddrisu as the surname, and coastal trading families are called Bannerman, Vanderpuije or Reindorf.

Two things are left out. Akan day names such as Kofi and Ama are given names, even where a family now carries one as a surname, and feminine forms such as Boatemaa or Serwaa are personal names. The list was not checked by speakers of these languages, so confirm a label before you rely on it.

How to choose Ghanaian last names

  • For an entry with parentheses, use the part before them: Boateng, not Boateng (Akan). The label only says which people the surname is best known among.
  • Pair the surname with a given name from the same people. An Akan day name such as Kwame or Akosua goes with Boateng or Owusu, an Ewe name such as Selorm or Dzifa with Agbeko or Amegashie, and Nii or Naa with a Ga surname such as Quartey or Laryea.
  • Double surnames are common in Ghana and usually join two family lines. Build one from two entries of the same people, such as Owusu-Ansah or Adu-Gyamfi.
  • Expect other spellings of the same name. Agyeman and Agyemang, Acheampong and Akyeampong, Kuffour and Kufuor are one surname each, and the list keeps a single spelling.
  • If the name is for a published book or a business, search it yourself first. These are the surnames of living families, and many are shared by thousands of people.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common last names in Ghana?

Mensah is usually named as the most common, and Owusu, Boateng, Osei, Appiah, Asante, Agyeman and Opoku are everywhere in the Akan south. Tetteh and Lamptey are everyday names around Accra, and Mahama, Alhassan and Iddrisu in the north. All of them are in the list.

Are Kofi, Kwame and Ama last names?

No. They are Akan day names, given for the day of the week a child is born: Kofi for a boy born on Friday, Kwame for a boy born on Saturday, Ama for a girl born on Saturday. Some families now carry a day name as a surname, which is how anglicised forms like Cudjoe and Quarshie arose, but the day names themselves belong on a first-name list and are left out here.

Why do some Ghanaian surnames sound Dutch, Danish or English?

The coast traded with Europeans for centuries, and families descended from European traders and their Ga, Fante or Ewe wives kept the trader's surname. Vanderpuije, Bartels and Vroom go back to the Dutch, Reindorf, Quist, Lutterodt and Richter to the Danes around Osu, and Bannerman and Brew to traders from Britain and Ireland. Fante families also coined English-looking surnames such as Blankson, Yankson and Koomson.

How reliable are the labels?

Treat them as a first guide. The list was de-duplicated and screened for filler, and it was not checked by speakers of Akan, Ewe, Ga or the northern languages. A label was added only where a surname is widely tied to one people, and marriage, migration and adoption mean that any family can be an exception.
