About watership down names
Richard Adams named his rabbits in two registers, and a convincing Watership Down name comes from one of them. Most of the Sandleford bucks carry plain English countryside names, usually plants a rabbit would actually meet on a Hampshire down: Hazel, Blackberry, Dandelion, Buckthorn, Speedwell, Hawkbit, Silverweed, Cowslip. A few are named for a feature or habit instead, like Bigwig (for his fur), Silver, Pipkin, Haystack and Boxwood. Efrafan officers follow the same pattern with slightly sterner plants: Campion, Vervain, Chervil, Woundwort, Charlock.
The second register is Lapine, the rabbits' own language. Does and mythic figures often keep their untranslated names: Hyzenthlay (shine-dew-fur), Thethuthinnang (movement of leaves), Nildro-hain (blackbird's song), Hlao-roo (little Pipkin), Thlayli (Bigwig), El-ahrairah and the Black Rabbit of Inlé. Lapine favours soft clusters like hl, hr, th and thl, endings in -ay, -il, -ao and -ang, and hyphenated compounds built from real roots: roo for little, rah for chief, hain for song, marli for mother, Frith for the sun and Inlé for the moon.
This generator mixes canon names with new ones from both traditions. For a buck, an English hedgerow plant almost always sounds right; for a doe, a seer or a legendary figure, reach for a Lapine name and give it a small meaning of your own.
Tips for choosing a name
- Bucks of an ordinary warren should get plant names a rabbit could graze or shelter under: Stitchwort, Teasel, Burnet, Yarrow. Avoid exotic or garden flowers, which break the downland setting.
- Keep Lapine names pronounceable by stressing the first syllable and building them from known roots; Hyzenthlay and Nildro-hain each mean something, so decide what yours means before you use it.
- Use the suffix -rah only for a Chief Rabbit (Hazel-rah, Threarah) and -roo only for a small or young rabbit; sprinkling them on everyone flattens the honour.
- Efrafan and military rabbits suit harder-sounding plants (Vervain, Charlock, Woundwort), while gentle or visionary characters suit softer ones (Bluebell, Pipkin, Snowdrop, Fiver).
- Give mythic or storyteller figures a long Lapine name or an epithet, like El-ahrairah or the Black Rabbit of Inlé, and keep everyday rabbits to one or two syllables.
Frequently asked questions
How are rabbits named in Watership Down?
Most are named after English wild plants and trees, such as Hazel, Blackberry, Dandelion, Speedwell and Cowslip, or after a physical trait like Bigwig and Silver. Does and legendary figures often keep Lapine names like Hyzenthlay, Thethuthinnang and El-ahrairah, which carry meanings in the rabbits' language.
What do Lapine names like Hyzenthlay and Hrairoo mean?
Hyzenthlay means shine-dew-fur, or fur shining like dew. Hrairoo is Fiver's Lapine name, roughly little thousand, because rabbits count only to four and hrair means a thousand or more. Hlao-roo (Pipkin) means little dimple in the grass, Thlayli (Bigwig) means furhead, and -rah added to a name marks a Chief Rabbit.
Can I use these names for a Watership Down OC or fanfiction?
Yes. The canon names belong to the book and its adaptations and are fine for fan fiction, roleplay and fan art, while the original plant and Lapine names here are free to use in any project, including your own warren stories.
What makes a good name for a doe in Watership Down style?
Adams gives most does Lapine names rather than plant names: Hyzenthlay, Thethuthinnang, Vilthuril, Nildro-hain and Thrayonlosa, with Clover as the farm-bred exception. A long, soft Lapine name with a meaning tied to light, leaves or birdsong matches the book's convention best.
