War Story Name Generator
Titles for war novels, short stories and screenplays
Generate titles for war fiction: front-line stories like The Last Bridge at Verrin, air and sea titles like Two Engines Home and The Corvette on the Convoy's Edge, home front ones like A Telegram for Mrs. Whitlow and quiet ones like What the Mud Remembers.
About war story names
War fiction titles lean on a few patterns, and each one tells the reader which kind of story is coming. A place and a small piece of ground promise a front-line story: The Last Bridge at Verrin, The Farmhouse on Hill Forty. A number and a stretch of time promise endurance (Nine Days on the Ridge). A trade and a relative put a family at the center (The Radio Operator's Daughter), and a shouted order or a phrase from army paperwork gives a dry, soldier's-eye tone (No Leave Till Winter, Hold Until Relieved).
The 1,000 titles run in eighteen strands: infantry, the air war, the war at sea, resistance and spies, the home front, prisoners of war, medics and nurses, letters and diaries, count titles, lyrical lines such as What the Mud Remembers, possessive titles, orders and service phrases, homecoming, tanks and guns with engineers and supply, one-word and two-word titles, civilians under siege and occupation, earlier centuries, and a mixed strand of animals, recruits and later wars.
Most places and all the ships and people were made up for the page, and some real seas, regions and towns appear only as settings. The titles stay with ordinary people in a war. Short titles are reused all the time, so search yours before it goes on a cover.
How to choose war story names
- Name the ground. A front-line story is usually about one small place, so let the title point at it: The Culvert Under the Railway and The Orchard Above Lissen say more than a title about glory or thunder.
- Let a job carry the title when the story follows one person. The Cipher Clerk and The Sapper's Wife tell the reader who to watch and which corner of the war they will see.
- Use a number only when the story keeps the promise. Nine Days on the Ridge and Thirty Missions from Wickham Fen set a clock, and readers will count along with you.
- Swap in your own names. Verrin, Halvenne and the destroyer Wintermere are placeholders: put your own village, ship or character there. If you use a real battle, check the dates and the ground yourself.
- Pick a quiet title for a story about coming home. Peace Came on a Tuesday and A Suit That No Longer Fit carry the weight without naming the war at all.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good title for a war story?
The titles that last tend to be concrete and small: a bridge, a ward, a letter, a number of days. The Last Bridge at Verrin and Letters from the Salient each name one thing the story will keep returning to. Understatement usually reads better than large words such as glory or valor.
Which kinds of war story does the list cover?
The front line has the largest share, with infantry titles such as The Sunken Road to Halvenne, air war titles such as The Navigator's Last Fix and naval ones such as Depth Charges at Dawn. The rest covers resistance and spies (A Wireless in the Hayloft), the home front (The Evacuees of Platform Two), prisoners (Roll Call in the Snow), medics (Sister Callaghan's Tent), letters, homecoming and a smaller strand set in earlier centuries (Muskets at the Stone Wall).
Are the places, ships and people in the titles real?
Most were made up for this page: Verrin, Halvenne, Wickham Fen and the destroyer Wintermere are not meant to point at a real battle or crew. Some real seas, regions and towns are used as settings, and some real aircraft types are named, as in One of Our Lancasters. The names were not compared with maps, navy lists or book catalogs, so search a title before you use it.
Can I use these titles for a film, a game or a memoir?
Yes. Nothing in the list depends on the book form, and the short titles such as Salient, Furlough and Periscope Depth suit a poster or a campaign name. For a memoir or a story set in a real battle, replace the invented place with the real one and check the facts yourself.
