Generate titles for historical novels: trade titles like The Lens Grinder's Daughter, wartime ones like Blackout on Harrow Street, courts and empires like A Portrait for the Infanta, and settings from The Scribe of Alexandria to The Indigo Dyer of Edo.

About historical fiction book names

Historical novels sell on a small set of title shapes. The best known is the trade title, a craft plus a relation: The Lens Grinder's Daughter, The Sailmaker's Apprentice, The Papermaker's Widow. Close to it is a trade and a place (The Midwife of Rue Clemence, The Scribe of Alexandria). War stories lean on a small domestic detail (A Ration Book for Two, Blackout on Harrow Street), and a place with a date does the work of a whole blurb: Lisbon, 1755.

The list has 1,000 titles in sixteen strands: two kinds of trade title, the home front and resistance, place and year, royal courts, the ancient world, the Middle Ages, the early modern era, the age of sail, the nineteenth century, America from the Revolution to the Gilded Age, the twentieth century, Asia and the Middle East, Africa with the Americas and the Pacific, dual-timeline titles built on letters, keys and houses, and lyrical or family-saga titles such as A Season of Salt and Ash.

Most characters, ships and houses are invented, the periods and most of the towns are real, and a few titles name a historical figure such as Hadrian or Cleopatra. The list was not compared with any catalog of published books, so search a title before you use it.

How to choose historical fiction book names

  • Match the title shape to the story. A trade title (The Fresco Painter's Apprentice) promises a life seen from the workshop, a place and year (Prague, Spring of 1618) promises events, and a dual-timeline title (The Key to Marchmont House) promises a present-day frame.
  • Swap in your own trade and town. The pattern is the useful part: put your character's craft and your setting where the lens grinder or Rue Clemence stands, and check that the trade existed in your period.
  • Use a concrete object of the period instead of an abstract noun. A Ration Book for Two and Silk Maps for the Escape Line place the reader in a decade faster than words like destiny or secrets.
  • Go easy on the possessive. So many novels are called The Somebody's Daughter or Wife that a new one is hard to find in a search. A place, a date or an object makes yours easier to tell apart.
  • Search the title before you commit. Titles cannot usually be protected by copyright, so many books share one, but a title that matches a well-known novel will bury yours in search results.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good historical fiction title?

It tells the reader the period and the point of view in a few words. The usual tools are a trade (The Organ Builder's Apprentice), a place with a date (Vienna at the Gates, 1683) or an object of the time (The Field Postcard). Vague, timeless phrases could belong to any genre, so they do less for a historical novel.

Which periods and places does the list cover?

It runs from the ancient world (The Charioteer of the Greens, Grain Ships for Ostia) through medieval Europe, royal courts, the age of sail and both world wars to the 1960s. About an eighth of the titles are set beyond Europe and North America, such as The Rice Broker of Dojima, The Calligrapher of Agra and The Bronze Caster of Benin City.

Why are so many historical novels called The Something's Daughter or Wife?

The form names a period trade and a point of view at once, often that of someone who stands just outside the official record, so readers treat it as a signal of the genre. Here it makes up about a fifth of the list, with relations varied beyond the usual two: The Chart Seller's Widow, The Compass Maker's Son, The Illuminator's Ward.

Are these titles already used by published novels?

The list was written for this page and was not compared with any catalog of published books. Historical fiction reuses its title shapes heavily, so a match with an existing novel is always possible, above all for the trade titles. Search the title on a bookseller's site before you print a cover.
