Generate historically styled war names for worldbuilding, alternate history, and fantasy or sci-fi campaigns, from succession crises and border wars to religious schisms and interstellar conflicts. Each name follows a real convention historians actually use.

About war names

Real wars are almost never named by the people fighting them. Historians name them afterward, and they reach for the same handful of conventions every time: the parties involved (the Franco-Prussian War), the cause (the War of the Spanish Succession), the duration (the Thirty Years' War), the place (the Crimean War), a defining event or object (the War of Jenkins' Ear), or the person who drove it (the Cardinal's War). Some names are bitterly ironic, like the Great War, and some are euphemisms, like the Troubles or the Emergency, chosen because one side refused to admit it was a war at all.

For worldbuilding, that gives you a powerful shortcut. A name like "The Salt Rebellion" instantly implies an economy, a grievance, and a losing side. "The War of the Two Queens" implies a succession crisis and a divided nobility. "The Belt Wars" tells a reader they are in a spacefaring setting with contested resources. The best fictional war names are ones that make readers ask a question, and the answer becomes your history.

This list mixes succession wars, trade wars, religious schisms, peasant risings, fantasy cataclysms, and interstellar conflicts, along with the vaguer, more ominous names people give to eras of violence they would rather not name at all.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide who is naming the war. Victors, losers, and neutral historians all pick different names, and characters from different nations can call the same conflict by different names.
  • Anchor the name to something concrete: a river, a commodity, a claimant, a treaty. "The Copper War" says more than "The War of Destruction."
  • Duration names ("The Ninety Days' War") work best when the length is surprising, either shockingly short or grindingly long.
  • Use euphemisms for conflicts your world's governments want to downplay: The Emergency, The Troubles, The Border Incident.
  • Number wars only if you have already established the first one; "The Second Sundering" implies a rich backstory you should be ready to hint at.

Frequently asked questions

How do wars get their names in real history?

Usually after the fact, by historians and journalists, based on the combatants, the cause, the location, the length, or a memorable incident. Contemporary names often differ from later ones; World War I was "the Great War" until there was a second.

What makes a good fictional war name?

Specificity. A name tied to a place, resource, person, or grievance implies history and invites questions. Vague epic names like "The War of Eternal Darkness" tell readers nothing about who fought or why.

Should a fantasy war have a grand or a mundane name?

Both can work, but mundane, historian-style names ("The War of the Free Cities") often feel more real, and you can save the grand names ("The Sundering") for genuinely world-altering events so they carry weight.

Can I use these war names in a published novel or game?

Yes. The names are free to use in commercial and personal projects. A few echo real historical patterns, so if you want to avoid any overlap, swap in your own place names and factions.
