Generate cottage names in the classic English and Irish tradition: flowers, trees, birds, old trades, and landmarks. Ideal for holiday lets, country homes, Airbnb listings, and cozy fiction settings.

About cottage names

Cottage naming is one of the oldest house-naming traditions in the English-speaking world. Before street numbering, rural British homes were identified by name, and the conventions that grew up then still hold: a plant or tree (Rose Cottage, Yew Tree Cottage), a bird or animal (Wren Cottage, Badger's Sett), the trade once carried on there (The Old Forge, Weaver's Cottage, Lock Keeper's Cottage), or the spot it occupies (Brookside, Lane End, Corner Cottage). Rose Cottage is the most common house name in England, closely followed by The Cottage, Ivy Cottage, and Orchard Cottage.

Many of the most charming names describe the building honestly (Thatch Cottage, Flint Cottage, The Bothy, Shepherd's Hut) or borrow a converted-building history like The Old Bakehouse or The Old Post Office. Literary names such as Toad Hall and Mole End show up on real houses too. Holiday-let owners in the Cotswolds, Cornwall, the Lake District, and Ireland often add a local touch (Sea Pink Cottage on the coast, Cowslip Cottage in a meadow village) so the name places the property before a guest arrives. Welsh and Gaelic names (Ty Gwyn, Tigh Beag) are here too.

A good cottage name is short, sounds gentle when said aloud, and describes something true about the place. If nothing else, choose the plant that grows by the door.

How to choose cottage names

Look at what surrounds the cottage first: the tree by the gate, the wildflower in the verge, the stream at the bottom of the garden. The traditional names all come from exactly these things.
For a converted building, use the 'The Old ___' form (The Old Dairy, The Old Forge); it is instantly understood and adds history.
Holiday-let owners should search the name plus the village on booking sites: Rose Cottage and Ivy Cottage exist in nearly every parish.
In the UK, check with your local council before formally naming or renaming a property; most require notification and will reject names that duplicate a nearby house.
Keep spelling conventional (Harbour or Harbor to match your country) and skip apostrophe-heavy names, which trip up postal and booking systems.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common cottage name?

Rose Cottage is the most common house name in England, with The Cottage, Ivy Cottage, Orchard Cottage, and The Old School House also near the top of most surveys of house names.

How do I officially name my cottage?

In the UK you notify your local council's street naming and numbering team, who check the name doesn't duplicate a neighbour's, then update Royal Mail. Elsewhere a house name is usually informal and simply added alongside the street address.

Can I use these names for a holiday let or Airbnb?

Yes, they are free to use. Choose one that isn't already listed in your village or town so guests and reviews don't get confused, and keep the sign name and the listing name identical.

Does a cottage name have to end in 'Cottage'?

No. Names like The Bothy, Orchard End, Sunnyside, and Mole End are all traditional. Adding Cottage makes the name clearer to strangers; dropping it makes it feel more established.
