Naming a house is an old tradition in Britain, Ireland, Australia, and much of the countryside worldwide, and the conventions are surprisingly consistent. The most common names describe what the building used to be (The Old Rectory, The Coach House, The Granary, The Old Post Office), what grows or lives nearby (Rose Cottage, Yew Tree Cottage, Wren's Nest, Badger's Sett), or what you see from the window (Meadow View, Seaview, Hilltop House). Adding 'The Old' in front of a former use is a shortcut to instant character, which is why converted forges, chapels, and dairies almost always keep that prefix.

The building word matters as much as the descriptor. Cottage suggests small and cosy, House is neutral, Lodge and Barn feel rustic and roomy, Grange and Manor sound grand, and Croft, Bothy, or Steading place a home firmly in Scotland. Coastal homes borrow from the shore (Driftwood, Marram Cottage, Tide's Reach), and hill-country homes from the landscape (Fell View, Tor View, Moorside).

If you are naming a real house, remember it will appear on post, deliveries, and directions, so it should be easy to spell and say aloud. If you are naming a fictional home, the same rules apply: 'The Old Vicarage' or 'Larkrise' tells a reader what sort of place it is before anyone walks through the door.
