Vegepygmy Name Generator
Drummed, hissed and russet names for mold folk
Vegepygmies, the mold folk of D&D, have no spoken language and no canon personal names, so none of the names here is canon: each is a drummed rhythm like Tak-Tak-Thrum, a descriptive name like Russetback or Leafscar, or a nickname outsiders give, such as Mister Mulch.
About vegepygmy names
Vegepygmies, the mold folk of Dungeons & Dragons, grow from russet mold and have no spoken language. They communicate by hissing, tapping and drumming, and the rules give them no personal names. Every name on this page is therefore an original, made for game masters and players who need to tell one mold-furred spear carrier from the next. None of them is canon, and this site is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
The list of 1,000 names works in a few distinct ways. About a fifth are rhythms set down as an outsider might hear them (Tak-Tak-Thrum, Dum-Tok) or describe them (Rattle-Twice, Three-Slow-Knocks). Short hisses such as Hsk and Ssith sit beside color names (Russetback, Ochre), body names built from leaf, tendril, bark and root (Mossrib, Leafscar), and deed or scar names like Spear-Lost and Ate-the-Ogre.
The rest covers the tribe around the individual: chief and sub-chief titles, names for thornies, the thorn-covered hound-like companions that hunt with them, band and warren names such as the Rustroot Band, and the nicknames explorers and neighbors hand out, from Mister Mulch to the Quiet One. Because the creatures cannot say any of these aloud, treat each name as a label your table uses, and let different characters call the same vegepygmy different things.
How to choose vegepygmy names
- Give the chief a title and the rank and file something shorter: Chief Thornmane leads, while Hsk, Bristle and Dum-Tok carry the spears.
- Tap a rhythm name on the table when the character appears. Players remember Tok-Tok-Thud faster as a sound than as a word.
- Let the party name the vegepygmies they meet. Outsider nicknames like Greenjack or Camp Thief fit because the creatures cannot introduce themselves.
- Name thornies like working hounds: one short word such as Burr, Latch or Spur is easy to call across a battle map.
- Pick one tribe or warren name per lair, for example the Sinkhole Folk, and echo its imagery of water, stone or rot in the individual names you choose.
Frequently asked questions
Do vegepygmies have names in D&D?
Not of their own. In the rules they cannot speak and communicate by hissing and rhythmic tapping, and the monster entries give them no personal names. The names here are originals for your table: rhythms, descriptions and nicknames given by others.
How do I name a vegepygmy that cannot talk?
Describe it or render its signal. A color or body name such as Rustshoulder or Twigfinger says what the party sees, and a rhythm name such as Klak-Hum-Klak records the pattern it taps. Deed names like Fell-in-the-Pit work once the creature has a story.
What is a thorny and what should I call one?
A thorny is the thorn-covered, hound-like plant creature that vegepygmies keep as a hunting companion. The list includes short pack names for them, such as Prickle, Hookjaw and Caltrop. One or two syllables read best, since a thorny is handled like a hunting dog.
Are these vegepygmy names official or canon?
No. Every name on this page is an original in the style of the creature, and none is taken from a rulebook or adventure. This site is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast. The names are meant for home games and your own stories.
