About Shadow of War orc names
Every orc in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War follows the same formula: a short, guttural Black Speech name plus an epithet that tells you how they fight or how they got famous. Ratbag the Coward, Brûz the Chopper, Ûk the Poet, Zog the Eternal, Ar-Kaûn the Uncursed. The names are one or two syllables, heavy on k, g, z, sh and th, and often carry a circumflex (û, â, ô) the way Tolkien wrote Nazgûl and the Ring-inscription's durbatulûk. The epithet is where the personality lives: it can be a deed (Wall-Crusher, Ranger-Killer, Ear-Collector), a flaw (the Drunk, the Slow-Witted, the Stinking), a boast (the Unkillable, the Mountain), or a joke at the orc's expense (the Gentle, the Handsome).
The game layers titles on top. Captains become Warchiefs or Overlords 'of Núrnen' or 'of Seregost', and orcs resurrected by the Bright Lord get the 'Ar-' prefix. Tribes matter too: a Feral orc sounds different from a Machine or Mystic one, so Beast-Master, Caragor-Tamer and Storm-Caller sit alongside Fire-Thrower and the Engineer.
This list mixes canon orcs from the games and Tolkien with original names built on the same phonology, so you can pull a full Nemesis roster: warchiefs, bodyguards, pit fighters and the one annoying captain who keeps coming back.
How to choose Shadow of War orc names
- Keep the first name short and harsh: one or two syllables, built from k, g, z, sh, th, r and the vowels û, â, o. Three-syllable orc names already sound too elegant for Mordor.
- Pick the epithet to match the role. Tanks and Destroyers get deed-names (Wall-Crusher, Tower-Breaker); Tricksters and Assassins get sly or flawed ones (the Sly, the Unseen, the Coward); Mystics get spirit or beast titles (Storm-Caller, Ghûl-Master).
- Use the two epithet shapes the game uses: 'the X' (Ûk the Poet) and hyphenated 'Noun-Verb' (Skak Tongue-Cutter). Mixing both across a roster looks authentic; using only one looks generated.
- Promote orcs with place titles: 'of Gorgoroth', 'of Cirith Ungol', 'of the Sea of Núrnen', 'Warchief of Lithlad'. In the games a title like that usually means the orc earned a fortress.
- For a returning nemesis, add the Ar- prefix (Ar-Kaûn, Ar-Zog) or a death-flavored epithet like the Returned, the Walking Dead or the Deathless, and give him a scar-based byname such as Half-Face or Burnt-Hide.
Frequently asked questions
How are orc names created in Shadow of War?
The Nemesis system combines a first name from a pool of Black Speech-style names (Ratbag, Brûz, Zog, Ûk) with a title drawn from the orc's traits, class or history (the Coward, the Chopper, Bone-Breaker). When an orc defeats or escapes you, gets burned, or is resurrected, the title can change to reflect it, which is why the same name can turn up as Mogg the Sly and later Mogg the Burnt.
Are these names canon or original?
Both. The list includes orcs that appear in the games (Ratbag the Coward, Brûz the Chopper, Ûk the Poet, Zog the Eternal, Ar-Kaûn) and Tolkien's orcs (Shagrat, Gorbag, Uglúk, Grishnákh, Azog), alongside original names written in the same phonology. If you need a character nobody will recognise, pick one of the original ones.
Can I use these for my own Shadow of War orcs or fan fiction?
Yes. The game doesn't let you rename orcs directly, but these work for fan fiction, Nemesis roster write-ups, YouTube series naming, or as villains in a Lord of the Rings tabletop campaign. The epithets also make good nicknames for custom orc miniatures.
What do the accents in names like Brûz and Ar-Kaûn mean?
The circumflex marks a long vowel in Tolkien's Black Speech, as in Nazgûl and the Ring-inscription's durbatulûk (Tolkien wrote some orc names with an acute instead: Uglúk, Grishnákh, Lugbúrz). The games use it mostly for flavor, so Brûz sounds like "brooz" and Ûk like "ook". You can drop the accents if you're typing names somewhere that doesn't support them without losing the style.
