About Tanzanian last names

Tanzania has more than a hundred peoples, and a family name often tells you which part of the country a family comes from. Massawe, Kimaro and Lyimo are Chagga names from the slopes of Kilimanjaro. Rweyemamu and Ishengoma are Haya names from Kagera. Masanja and Shija are Sukuma names from the lake zone, Mwakyusa and Mwaipopo are Nyakyusa names from Mbeya, and Mollel and Laizer come from Maasai and Arusha clans in the north.

Swahili is a language, not one people with one stock of surnames. Most Tanzanians speak it, so "Swahili last names" here means the names of the coast and the islands, a large section of this list: Mwinyi, Makame, Khamis, Vuai and Jecha. Many are an ancestor's Muslim given name, and on the mainland they often end in a vowel, as in Hamisi, Rashidi and Saidi.

That is the other half of the story. Many Tanzanians carry no inherited clan name. They use a father's or grandfather's given name in the last-name slot, so Juma, Shabani and Athumani, or Swahili-spelt Bible names such as Yohana, Petro and Daudi, do the work of a surname. More than a quarter of the 500 are names of this kind. The rest are clan and family names. Every entry is one surname, with no given names.

How to choose Tanzanian last names

  • Match the name to your character's home region: Mushi, Swai or Temba for Kilimanjaro, Mutalemwa or Kaijage for Kagera, Maganga or Mabula for the lake zone, Sanga, Mbilinyi or Kalinga for the southern highlands.
  • Read the prefixes. Mwa- names such as Mwaipopo and Mwakalinga are mostly Nyakyusa, She- names such as Shekilango and Shelukindo belong to the Sambaa of the Usambara mountains, and Rwe- names such as Rwegasira are Haya.
  • On the coast and in Zanzibar a name usually runs given name, father's name, grandfather's name. Pick two entries, such as Khamis and Makame, to follow a given name.
  • For a patronymic, a Muslim father's name such as Athumani or Rajabu suits the coast and the islands, and a Bible name such as Yakobo or Samweli suits much of the inland.
  • Kenyan names are a different stock. For a Kalenjin, Kikuyu or Luo character, use the Kenyan last name generator instead.

Frequently asked questions

What are common Tanzanian last names?

There is no single national stock. Among clan names, Massawe, Mushi and Kimaro are well known around Kilimanjaro, Masanja and Maganga in the lake zone, and Mapunda and Komba in the south. Across the country you also meet fathers' names used as surnames, such as Juma, Hamisi, Yohana and Daudi.

Are there Swahili last names?

Swahili is first of all a language, spoken by most Tanzanians whatever their home community. The names people usually mean are those of the coast and of Zanzibar, such as Mwinyi, Makame, Haji, Kombo, Mzee and Bakari. Many of them began as Muslim given names, which reflects the long history of Islam on the coast.

Why do so many Tanzanians have a first name as their last name?

In much of the country the last name is a father's or grandfather's given name, not an inherited family name. Someone called Juma Hamisi Shabani is Juma, child of Hamisi, grandchild of Shabani. In families that follow this pattern the last name can change with each generation.

Can you tell where someone is from by a Tanzanian surname?

Often a region, but not reliably. Clan names such as Lyimo, Ishengoma or Mwakyusa point to one area, while many other names are shared between neighboring communities. A patronymic such as Ramadhani or Petro says something about a family's faith and nothing about its home.
