About Kenyan last names

Kenya has no single surname tradition. In most communities the name in the family-name slot began as somebody's given name. A Kikuyu child is named after a grandparent, and Luo and Kalenjin names record the time or circumstances of birth: Otieno is a boy born at night, Kipkoech a boy born at dawn. On identity cards the father's or grandfather's name then serves as the surname, and many families now hand it down unchanged. This list gives what people really carry.

The names come from across the country. There are Kikuyu names such as Kamau, Mwangi and Njoroge, Luo names such as Otieno and Odhiambo, and Kalenjin names such as Koech, Rotich and Cheruiyot. Kamba (Mutua, Musyoka), Luhya (Wafula, Simiyu), Kisii (Nyakundi, Mogaka), Meru and Embu (Mugambi, Njeru), Maasai, Samburu and Turkana names follow, with Mijikenda and Taita names from the coast (Kahindi, Mwadime) and Swahili, Somali and Borana names (Bakari, Warsame, Guyo).

Entries are plain surnames with no community label, because many are shared: Kariuki is carried by Kikuyu, Embu and Meru families, Barasa by Luhya and Teso. A minority are women's birth names such as Wanjiru, Achieng and Chebet. They are given names, but many Kenyan women carry one in the family-name slot. No name here proves anyone's community or ancestry.

How to choose Kenyan last names

  • Build the full name the way many Kenyans do: a Christian or Muslim given name, then a birth name, then the family name, as in Grace Wanjiru Kamau or Peter Kiprono Koech.
  • Keep one family inside one naming tradition unless the story says otherwise. Otieno sits naturally beside Achieng, and Kiplagat beside Chepkoech.
  • Use the prefixes for gender. Luo birth names in O- are male and in A- female (Otieno, Atieno); Kalenjin Kip- is male and Chep- or Jep- female; Bukusu Wafula has the female form Nafula. A daughter can still inherit a male form as her surname.
  • For an older or more formal character, put a particle in front of the father's name: arap Koech among the Kalenjin, ole Sironka among the Maasai, wa Kamau among the Kikuyu. The particles are not entries here, so add them yourself.
  • Expect spelling variants. Ndung'u is also written Ndungu, Kosgei is also Kosgey and Omollo is also Omolo. The apostrophe in ng' marks a sound of its own, so keep it where the list has it.

Frequently asked questions

What are common last names in Kenya?

Names you meet all over the country include Kamau, Mwangi, Otieno, Odhiambo, Ochieng, Koech, Kiprop, Mutua, Wafula and Barasa. They come from large communities, so they turn up in every town and profession. All of them are in this list.

Do Kenyans have family surnames?

Today most do on paper, but the custom is recent in many communities. Traditionally a person carried a birth name and was identified by a father's name, and that name has become the surname on documents. Some families pass one name down the generations, while in others each generation still takes the father's own name.

Why are women's names like Wanjiru and Achieng in a last-name list?

Because many Kenyan women carry their birth name where a form asks for a surname. Wanjiru, Wambui, Achieng, Akinyi, Chebet and Nafula are given names by origin, and the list includes a minority of them for that reason. Use one for a woman who goes by her own names, and a male form such as Kamau or Otieno where she uses a father's or husband's name.

Can you tell a Kenyan's community from the last name?

A name often points to a language, as Kipchumba is Kalenjin in form and Nyakundi is Gusii. It is never proof, because names are shared between neighbors, families intermarry and people move. Treat the name as a hint about a character's background and let the story decide the rest.
