Stark Name Generator

House Stark names are the most conservative in Westeros. Where Targaryens reach for Valyrian vowels, the Starks of Winterfell recycle a small pool of First Men names for eight thousand years: Brandon (so often that the family tree needs epithets like the Builder, the Breaker, the Shipwright and Ice Eyes), Rickard, Rodrik, Torrhen, Cregan, Benjen, Beron, Edwyle, Jonnel, Artos and Eddard. The sounds are short and hard, with -rik, -ard, -on and -en endings and few soft Norman names; Robb, Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon are nudged English names, while Stark women tend to -a and -ara endings such as Lyanna, Lyarra, Serena, Berena, Sarra and Lorra.

A Stark name also carries a structure. Trueborn children take Stark; bastards of Winterfell take Snow, the Northern bastard name (Jon Snow, Brandon Snow, Ramsay Snow of the Dreadfort); and cadet branches founded by younger sons become Karstark (from Karlon Stark) and the extinct Greystark of the Wolf's Den. Notable Starks pick up epithets rather than numbers: Theon the Hungry Wolf, Torrhen the King Who Knelt, Rodrik the Wandering Wolf, Cregan the Old Man of the North.

This generator mixes canon Starks from the books and the worldbook with original names built from the same First Men phonology, so a fan-fiction lord, a Winterfell bastard, a Karstark cousin or a Stark of a thousand years past all sound like they belong in the North.
