About staff names

A staff is the one weapon a wizard carries everywhere, so its name has to do two jobs: sound old, and tell you what kind of magic lives in it. Fantasy games settled on a few reliable shapes. The descriptive title (Staff of the Magi, Staff of Power, Staff of Withering) says what it does; the proper noun (Atiesh, Wabbajack, Benediction) says it has a history; and the epithet (the Whispering Crook, the Old Ash) says someone has been telling stories about it for a long time. Real-world staffs add a fourth register: the Caduceus and Rod of Asclepius, the Thyrsus of Dionysus, Aaron's rod that budded, the khakkhara of wandering monks and Sun Wukong's Ruyi Jingu Bang are all named objects that feel heavier than anything invented last week.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the wood and the owner. A druid's staff is hazel, rowan or yew and named like a living thing (the Waking Oak); a necromancer's is bone or blackened ash and named like a grave marker (Staff of the Drowned, Rod of Lead).
  • Use 'Staff of...' for a descriptive title the player reads on an item card, but give a legendary staff a proper name as well; Atiesh and Wabbajack are remembered, Staff of Fire is not.
  • Say the name out loud in a spell. A staff name is shouted in combat, so two or three stressed syllables (Greyhaft, Kingsplinter, Ashenbrand) beat a long clause.
  • Mix the vocabulary of shepherds, pilgrims and monks (crook, crozier, stave, khakkhara, distaff) into a setting to suggest that staffs were tools before they were weapons.
  • If the staff has a curse or a cost, hint at it in the name: Staff of the Oathbreaker, the Widow's Candle and Sorrow's Rod tell the party something is wrong before the first attunement.
