Generate names for the social classes of an invented society: ruling strata like The Gilded and The High Table, working layers like Hearthfolk and The Loom Hands, and sci-fi tiers like Topsiders and Underdeck. Made for fantasy kingdoms, dystopias and starship colonies.

About social class names

A class name does two jobs in a setting: it tells the reader who stands above whom, and it shows what the society thinks rank is made of. A realm that sorts people by birth talks about blood and lineage (First Blood, The Thrice-Named). One that sorts by work names the tool or the product (The Loom Hands, The Ink Caste). A starship sorts by where you sleep (Topsiders, Underdeck), and a bureaucratic state by the form you were filed under (Grade Four Citizens, The Provisional).

The list covers ruling and noble strata, priestly and scholar castes, warrior and merchant classes, artisans, laborers, servants and bonded groups, people outside the system, color, metal and gem ranks, deck and district classes for science fiction, and dystopian grades. Seventy entries are whole ladders written as one line, such as Crown, Sword, Plow, Chain, for when you want a matched set at once.

Twenty-four entries are historical classes, each labeled with its time or place, such as Helots (ancient Sparta) and Yeomen (medieval England). The rest mix invented labels with plain words of rank and land tenure that history also used, such as Freeholders and Journeymen. None of them is meant to describe a real group.

How to choose social class names

  • Name the classes from inside the society. The top layer picks flattering words for itself and plain or dismissive ones for everyone else, so decide who coined each label.
  • Give every layer the same grammar when the state did the sorting (grades, bands, numbers), and mismatched grammar when the classes grew up over centuries.
  • Use a ladder entry as a starting set, then swap one rung for a single name from the list so the system looks lived in rather than designed.
  • Decide what moves a person between classes: a marriage, an exam, a debt, a deck transfer. The answer often suggests a better name than rank alone.
  • Write down both the official name of a class and what the neighbors call it. A setting that has both reads as older and more settled.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of social class names are in this generator?

The 1,000 entries cover ruling and noble strata, priestly, scholar, warrior and merchant classes, artisans and laborers, servants and bonded groups, outsiders, color and metal ranks, sci-fi deck classes and dystopian grades. Examples include The Gilded, Hearthfolk, The Ink Caste, Salt-Sworn and The Quiet Tier.

Can I get a whole hierarchy instead of a single class?

Yes. Seventy entries are complete ladders of three to five ranks written top to bottom on one line, for example Gold, Silver, Bronze, Iron, Clay or Topsiders, Midships, Underdeck, Bilge. Keep rolling until one fits, then rename individual rungs to suit your world.

Does the list include names for a ruling class?

Yes. Many entries name the top of a society: The High Table, The Thousand Families, Crownkin, The Seated and Signet Lords are all in the list. Pair one with a name for the layer directly beneath it to show who the rulers measure themselves against.

Are any of these class names real?

Twenty-four entries are historical classes, and each carries a label saying where or when it existed, such as Patricians (ancient Rome), Samurai (feudal Japan) and Thralls (Viking Age Scandinavia). Other entries reuse ordinary historical words such as Freeholders, Copyholders and Bannermen without a label. The rest are invented, and none is meant to describe any real group.
