Generate slugcat names in the Rain World style: role titles like Survivor, Monk and Rivulet, Iterator-flavored names such as Five Pebbles and Looks to the Moon, and short cycle names for OCs, pups and Downpour campaigns.
About slugcat names
Rain World never gives its player character a proper name. The slugcat is called by a role, and the Downpour expansion turned that into a convention: Survivor, Monk, Hunter, Gourmand, Artificer, Rivulet, Spearmaster, Saint and the hidden Inv are all descriptors rather than names, and the Watcher continues the pattern. That is the first and most authentic way to name a slugcat: a single capitalised noun that describes what your creature does or how it plays, like Forager, Drifter or Skulker.
The second style comes from the Iterators, the vast biological supercomputers whose names are short poetic phrases: Five Pebbles, Looks to the Moon, No Significant Harassment, Seven Red Suns, Chasing Wind. Fans borrow this cadence for slugcat OCs and story characters, producing names like Waits Beneath the Pipes or Two Small Rains, often a number plus a natural image or a small action observed over many cycles.
A third, softer register fits slugpups and pet-style names: single syllables and small things from the world itself, such as Pip, Nub, Batfly, Popcorn or Rubble. Mixing the three registers is normal in the community, and the list below is organised so you can grab a campaign-style title, an Iterator-style phrase, or a cute pup name depending on the character you are building.
Tips for choosing a name
- Decide which register you want first: a one-word role (Forager) reads like an official campaign, a phrase (Counts the Falling Drops) reads like an Iterator or a story character, and a small noun (Pip) reads like a pup.
- For OCs, pick a name that matches the slugcat's mechanic or region; a fast, aquatic OC suits Rivulet-style names like Runoff or Torrent, a fire-throwing one suits Cinder or Flare.
- Iterator-style phrase names work best at three to five words with one concrete image (pipes, rain, pearls, neurons) and either a number or a verb.
- Region-based names such as Shoreline Wanderer or Garbage Wastes Runner instantly tell other players where your slugcat comes from.
- Keep pup names to one or two syllables so they stay cute in dialogue and are easy to yell across a Discord voice call during Expedition mode.
Frequently asked questions
What are the official slugcat names in Rain World?
The base game slugcats are Survivor, Monk and Hunter. Downpour added Gourmand, Artificer, Rivulet, Spearmaster, Saint and the joke campaign Inv, and The Watcher expansion added the Watcher. All are role descriptors rather than personal names, which is why fans often invent their own.
Why do so many slugcat OC names sound like Iterator names?
Iterators like Five Pebbles and Looks to the Moon have short poetic phrase names, and the fandom adopted that cadence for characters connected to Iterators or for slugcats with a mysterious, ancient feel. Any three-to-five-word phrase with a number, a verb or a natural image will fit the pattern.
Can I name my slugpup in the game?
The vanilla game does not let you type a name for slugpups, but many players name them for their own stories, and mods such as Pups+ and slugpup naming mods add the option. Short names like Pip, Nub or Popcorn are popular choices.
Are these names okay to use for a Rain World OC or fan fiction?
Yes. Aside from the official campaign titles and canonical Iterator names, everything here is original and free to use for your OCs, comics, mods or fan fiction.
