Atmoran Name Generator
Blunt saga names from frozen Atmora
Generate Atmoran names in the style of The Elder Scrolls: short, blunt names for the Five Hundred Companions and their kin, such as Tesk, Hroka, Yrsgald and Throm the Oar-Breaker. The list also holds totem priests, elders, giant-kin and longship names.
About Atmoran names
Atmorans are the people of frozen Atmora in The Elder Scrolls, the ancestors of the Nords who crossed the Sea of Ghosts with Ysgramor and his Five Hundred Companions. The lore about them is thin: a few names in the in-game Songs of the Return and little else. Those names point two ways. The saga strand is archaic and often opens in Y, as in Ysgramor and his sons Yngol and Ylgar. The crew strand is short and blunt, like Jeek of the River, Froa and Grosta: one or two syllables, hard consonants, no clan surname.
This list of 1,000 names leans on the second strand and is written in the style of that material. Single names such as Tesk, Hroka and Vulmyr sit beside Y-names like Yrsgald, place bynames like Dresk of the Frozen Shore and earned bynames like Throm the Oar-Breaker. You will also find captains and shield-siblings, clever-men and priests of the animal totems, elders, giant-kin, sibling pairs and a small share of longship names in the manner of Jorrvaskr and Ylgermet.
Nine entries carry the tag (canon): names that appear in the games' own books, kept as anchors for the sound. Everything else is an original name, not Elder Scrolls lore, so treat it as raw material for your own characters, crews and fan stories.
How to choose Atmoran names
- Start with a single name. The Atmorans of the Five Hundred go by one blunt name, so pick one from the list, such as Krad or Hroka. A byname comes later, for a deed or a home shore.
- Give a byname only when the character has earned it. Throm the Oar-Breaker and Tesk the Unburned each hint at a story; the inherited clan names of Skyrim's holds belong to later Nords.
- Keep a Y-name such as Yrsgald or Ygnar for a chieftain's line, the way the sound runs through Ysgramor, Yngol and Ylgar, and let the crew's names stay shorter and rougher.
- Name the ship along with the crew. A longship such as The Vorrmaskr gives a band of shield-siblings one banner to sail and fight under.
- Say the name aloud. If it could pass for a modern Scandinavian given name it will read as a Skyrim Nord, so pick something shorter and harder.
Frequently asked questions
Who are the Atmorans in The Elder Scrolls?
They are the people of Atmora, a frozen continent north of Tamriel, and the ancestors of the Nords. In the lore Ysgramor led the Five Hundred Companions from Atmora to Skyrim, and Jorrvaskr, the hall of the Companions in Whiterun, carries the name of one of their ships. Beyond that the sources are sparse, so most Atmoran naming is inference from a few names.
How are Atmoran names different from Nord names?
Nord names in the Skyrim games read like Old Norse given names, often followed by a hyphenated clan name that a whole family shares. The names here feel older: one short name such as Krad or Hroka, or a single name with a personal byname, as in Hroka Whale-Slayer or Ygnar of the Ice-Field. A byname belongs to the person who earned it, not to a family.
Which names on the list come from the games?
Only the nine entries tagged (canon), among them Ysgramor (canon) and Jeek of the River (canon). The rest are original names written in the style of that material and are not part of Elder Scrolls lore. This site has no affiliation with Bethesda.
What are the longship names for?
The Five Hundred sailed in named ships, and Jorrvaskr and Ylgermet are two that the lore records. Entries that begin with The or Longship, such as The Vorrmaskr and Longship Tsurakk, are original ship names in that manner. Use them for a crew's vessel, a mead hall or a warband.
