Generate skill names for RPGs, MMOs, fighting games, tabletop characters and original anime-style heroes: active attacks, spells, passives, ultimates and signature techniques, plus a few iconic canon moves for reference.

About skill names

Game skill names follow a few recognizable grammars, and knowing them is what makes a made-up ability sound like it belongs in a real skill tree. Western RPGs and MMOs lean on a two-word formula: Shield Bash, Chain Lightning, Whirlwind Cleave. Final Fantasy built a tiered vocabulary (Fire, Fira, Firaga; Cure, Cura, Curaga) that tells the player how strong a spell is by its suffix. Fighting games favor punchy names that can be shouted (Shoryuken, Sonic Boom). Anime-style techniques go the other way and get long and ceremonial, often with a colon separating the school from the move, like Water Breathing: Flowing Dance.

The list mixes all of these: original actives, passives and masteries (Iron Constitution, Keen Edge), grand ultimates (Starfall Cascade, Judgment Hammer), and a few iconic canon moves to calibrate tone. A good skill name tells the player three things at a glance: the element or damage type, whether it is a strike, a projectile, a buff or a defensive move, and roughly how big it is. Frostbite Arrow, Rampart Wall and Meteor Dive each pass that test without a tooltip.

When building a full kit, keep the naming style consistent within a class. A rogue whose skills are Backstab, Fan of Knives and Vanishing Act reads as one character; add Sacred Flame and the kit feels stitched together.

How to choose skill names

  • Encode the element and action type in the name: Glacial Spike is obviously an ice projectile, Rime Armor is obviously an ice defensive buff. Players should guess the effect before reading the tooltip.
  • Scale the length to the rank. Basic skills get one or two words (Feint, Shield Bash); ultimates can take three or four (Dirge of the Fallen, Wrath of the Heavens).
  • Use the same naming register across one character's kit. Anime colon-style names (School: Technique) and MMO two-word names both work, but do not mix them on one skill bar.
  • Passives should sound like traits, not actions: Iron Will, Combat Reflexes, Night Vision. Actives should sound like things you do: Hamstring, Cleave, Immolate.
  • Say the name out loud. Fighting-game and anime moves are shouted in-game, so favor hard consonants and rhythm (Rising Dragon Kick) over soft, wordy phrases.

Frequently asked questions

What kinds of skill names does this generator include?

It covers active attacks, spells, ranged shots, defensive buffs, passives and masteries, ultimates, anime-style signature techniques and fighting-game special moves. It also includes a handful of well-known canon skills from games and anime as tone references, but most names are original.

Can I use these skill names in my own game or story?

The original names are free to use in games, tabletop campaigns, fan fiction and original characters. The canon moves included for reference (for example Hadouken or Kamehameha) belong to their franchises and are there for inspiration, not for use in a commercial product.

How do I name a whole skill tree consistently?

Pick one grammar per class and stick to it: two-word action names for warriors, element-plus-noun for mages, stealthy verbs for rogues. Reserve longer, more dramatic names for capstone abilities so the tree feels like it escalates.

What makes a skill name sound like an ultimate?

Scale and finality. Ultimates use cosmic or apocalyptic nouns (Cataclysm, Starfall Cascade, Judgment Hammer), often three or more words, and sometimes a possessive that names a deity, king or legend, like Warden's Oath or Wrath of the Heavens.
