Generate ability names for RPGs, MOBAs, fighting games, tabletop characters and original superpowers: elemental spells, melee techniques, stealth tricks, healer and support skills, passives, ultimates and tech gadgets that sound ready for a skill bar.

About ability names

Good ability names do a job before the player ever reads the tooltip. Most follow one of a few shapes that games have trained us to parse instantly: a descriptor plus an action (Crescent Slash, Seismic Rupture), a single evocative verb or noun (Blink, Riposte, Eviscerate), a possessive that implies lore (Winter's Grasp, Hunter's Mark, Titan's Stride), or a short phrase that sounds like a title (Eye of the Storm, Dance of Blades, Ten Thousand Cuts). Length usually signals weight: one-word abilities feel like basic or utility skills, two words suit core rotation abilities, and longer titles are reserved for ultimates and signature moves.

This list covers the full cast of a typical roster. You will find elemental spells for fire, frost, lightning, earth, wind and water mages; cuts, slams and stances for melee fighters; poisons, traps and vanishing tricks for rogues; blessings, wards and mends for healers and paladins; curses, bone magic and plague for necromancers and warlocks; gadgets, drones and stims for shooters and sci-fi settings; martial arts forms; card-and-luck gambler skills; and monster-flavored abilities like Medusa's Curse and Kraken Grip for boss design.

Use them for tabletop homebrew, indie game design, fan-made kits, anime-style OC power sets, or simply to name the signature move your character uses when the music changes.

How to choose ability names

  • Match the name's length to the ability's importance: one word for basics (Blink, Sever), two for core skills (Frost Nova, Shield Bash), a full phrase only for ultimates (Thousand Petal Requiem).
  • Pick a verb family per character so their kit feels coherent. A berserker's abilities should cleave, crush and rend; a mage's should bolt, surge and burst; mixing registers makes a kit feel like several characters stapled together.
  • Let the name tell the player what the ability does at a glance. Frozen Orb, Smoke Veil and Rally Cry need no tooltip; something like Crimson Reckoning is fine for an ultimate but confusing for a basic attack.
  • Avoid reusing the same word twice in one kit. Two abilities starting with Shadow or ending in Strike will be mixed up mid-fight; vary the structure instead (Shadow Step, Umbral Pact, Nightfall Ambush).
  • For ultimates and signature moves, borrow from ritual language: Requiem, Verdict, Reckoning, Benediction, Final Cadence. These words carry finality without needing the word Ultimate.

Frequently asked questions

What makes an ability name sound like it belongs in a real game?

Clarity and rhythm. Most professional ability names are two stressed syllables plus one or two unstressed ones (Frost Nova, Shield Bash, Chain Lightning), use concrete nouns and strong verbs, and hint at the effect: Frozen Orb is obviously a frost projectile, Smoke Veil is obviously stealth. Invented or lore-heavy names work best when reserved for ultimates, where the spectacle explains itself.

Can I use these ability names in my own game or campaign?

Yes. The list mixes genre-standard names that many games share (Fireball, Backstab, Counterspell) with original ones (Sixfold Severance, Hollow Verdict, Fate Weaver). For a commercial release, treat very distinctive multi-word titles as inspiration and check that your final name is not a trademark of a specific game.

How should I name a full set of abilities for one character?

Decide the character's theme and verb family first, then pick names that escalate: a basic (Wind Slash), two or three core abilities (Zephyr Step, Gale Force, Vacuum Blade), a defensive or utility skill (Tailwind) and an ultimate with a longer title (Eye of the Storm). Keep the starting letters and structures varied so nothing is confused in the heat of play.

Are these names good for anime-style or superhero powers?

Many are. The martial arts entries (Iron Palm, Shadowless Kick, Lotus Palm), the ultimates (Thousand Petal Requiem, Crimson Reckoning) and the state changes (Awakened State, Limit Break, True Form) suit shonen-style power systems, while the tech entries (Hardlight Barrier, Nano Swarm, Overclock) and the cosmic ones (Gravity Well, Event Horizon) work for comic-book heroes and villains.
