Names for rams, siege towers, bombards and trebuchets
Generate siege engine names for battering rams, siege towers, bombards, sows and trebuchets: The Iron Goat, Old Knocker, Tall Meg, The Walking Keep, Idle Ilse and Saint Barbara's Fist, with sets for orc, dwarf, elven, undead and imperial armies.
About siege engine names
Armies have long named the machines that take a castle. The crusaders at Acre had Bad Neighbour and God's Stone-Thrower, Edward I had Warwolf built at Stirling, and the great bombards of the 1400s got women's nicknames such as Mons Meg and Dulle Griet. This list holds 1,000 siege engine names in that tradition for novels, tabletop campaigns and strategy games.
Most of the list is for the engines that work at the wall itself. Battering rams take names from heads, horns and knocking: The Iron Goat, Curlhorn, Old Knocker, The Widow's Knock. Siege towers, also called belfries, are named for height and for their slow walk, like Tall Meg and The Walking Keep. Bombards follow the nickname habit with Idle Ilse and Sour Marta, or carry a saint, as in Saint Barbara's Fist; Barbara is the patron saint of gunners. Sows, cats and tortoises are old terms for the roofed sheds that sheltered sappers, hence The Old Sow and Cat at the Mousehole.
The rest covers trebuchets, mangonels and ballistae, plus sets for orc, dwarf, elven, undead and imperial armies. A few names carry a label in parentheses: those belong to historical engines or, in one case, to a novel. Every other name is invented or a plain siege term, with no history as a named engine.
How to choose siege engine names
- Match the name to the machine. A ram wants a head, a horn or a knock (Curlhorn, Old Knocker), a siege tower wants height or a slow walk (Tall Meg, Steeple on Wheels), and a sow or cat wants something low and patient (Cat at the Mousehole).
- Let the crew do the naming. Soldiers picked nicknames, insults and patrons, so a bombard called Sour Marta or a ram called The Constable's Cudgel sounds like camp talk and not like a title from a herald.
- Give each army its own voice. An orc warband fields Gate-Chewer and Big Log, a dwarf hold brings Durgan's Grudge, an elven host Sorrow of the Greenwood, and an imperial siege train Victrix.
- Keep the labelled names for what they are. Warwolf (historic trebuchet) and Mons Meg (historic bombard) were actual machines, so use them in historical fiction or borrow their style, not their history, for an engine of your own.
- Say it the way the garrison would shout it from the wall. Short names such as Hingebane carry across a ditch; a long one like The Hill That Came to Them works better in narration.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good name for a battering ram?
Rams are usually named for the head that does the work or for the knocking: The Iron Goat, Curlhorn, Old Knocker and The Widow's Knock. Grim compounds aimed at the gate also fit, such as Hingebane and Barsplitter, and so do names for the timber and the crew that swings it, like The Long Oak and Hundred-Man Beam.
What were historical siege engines called?
Warwolf was a trebuchet built for Edward I at the siege of Stirling Castle in 1304. Bad Neighbour, Malvoisin in French, and God's Stone-Thrower were engines at the siege of Acre during the Third Crusade, and Helepolis, the taker of cities, was a giant siege tower built for Demetrius at Rhodes. These names carry a label in the list; every name without a label is invented or is a plain siege term such as Testudo or Vinea.
Why do bombards have women's names?
The habit is recorded on several great guns of the 1400s: Mons Meg, Dulle Griet (roughly Mad Meg), and Faule Mette and Faule Grete (Lazy Mette and Lazy Grete). The list follows that style with invented names such as Idle Ilse, Sour Marta and Great Gudrun, and adds saints, led by Saint Barbara, the patron saint of gunners.
What are sows, cats and tortoises in a siege?
They are old words for wheeled, roofed shelters that were pushed up to a wall so that sappers and ram crews could work under cover, and a mantlet is a movable screen for archers. The list names them after low, patient animals and plain sheds: The Old Sow, Cat at the Mousehole, The Tortoise and The Wicker Wall.
