Car Engine Name Generator
Invented names for the engine under the hood
Generate invented names for the engine itself: muscle-era nameplates like Thunderhawk 427 and Wolverine Big Block, plain old-timers like Iron Baron Six, tuner codes like WZ26DETT, marketing names like HyperFlow V6, electric units like Helion e-Drive and garage nicknames like Frankenmotor. Made for fictional carmakers, car-building and racing games, and project builds.
About car engine names
An engine usually has two names. One is the factory code, a string of letters and digits that tells engineers the family, the size and the fuel system. The other is the name on the air cleaner or in the brochure, chosen to sell the car. Chrysler's Hemi and Ford's Coyote are real examples of that second kind. They are mentioned here only to show the pattern: the 1,000 names in this list are invented in those styles, and no link with any carmaker is implied.
The list mixes sixteen styles so a reroll can land anywhere: American V8 nameplates built from animals and weather (Thunderhawk 427, Razorback 383), plain names for old inline engines (Steady Six), invented factory codes (QXR-30T Inline-6), marketing names for a technology (HyperFlow V6), Japanese-style codes and tuner builds (WZ26DETT, Wangan 3.1 Stroker), European names with layout and liters (Furka 3.0 V12), diesels, electric and hybrid units (Helion e-Drive), race and crate engines, city-car engines, prewar luxury engines, rotaries and boxers, and nicknames for a home build (The Anvil, Frankenmotor).
The tags follow real conventions: 427 on an American engine is cubic inches, 3.0 is liters, 660 on a small engine is cubic centimeters, and the number on an electric unit is its output in kilowatts.
How to choose car engine names
- Decide who is naming the engine. A factory gives a code and a brochure name, a tuner gives a stage or a spec, and an owner gives a nickname like Old Lumpy.
- Match the tag to the car: cubic inches suit an American V8, liters suit almost everything else, and kilowatts suit an electric drive unit.
- Build a family for a fictional carmaker: keep one style and vary the size, such as a 1.6, a 2.0 and a 2.5 under the same name, instead of mixing styles across the range.
- Change the number freely. If the name fits but your engine is a 5.0, swap the figure and keep the layout plausible for that size.
- If you plan to sell something under one of these names, check for yourself that nobody else already uses it.
Frequently asked questions
Are these real engine names?
No. They are invented in the styles carmakers, tuners and builders use, for stories, games and project cars. Real engines such as Chrysler's Hemi or Ford's Coyote are named on this page only as examples of the style, and no connection with any carmaker is implied. With 1,000 entries we cannot promise that none matches a name somebody has used, so check before you use one commercially.
What do the numbers in an engine name mean?
Usually displacement. Three digits on an American engine are cubic inches, as in Thunderhawk 427 or Razorback 383. A figure with a decimal point is liters, as in Furka 3.0 V12, and small engines are often given in cubic centimeters, as in Wren 660 Triple. Electric units in the list carry their output in kilowatts instead.
How do I name the engine in my project car?
Builders usually name a swap after its story: where the engine came from, what went wrong, or how it sounds. The list has a nickname style for that, with entries like The Anvil, Frankenmotor, Junkyard Jewel and Old Lumpy. If you would rather sound like a factory, pick a nameplate and put your real displacement after it.
Can I use these names in a game or a novel?
Yes, that is what they are for: car-company and engine-design games, racing careers, and fiction that needs a believable power unit without borrowing a real one. Names like HyperFlow V6 or Helion e-Drive suit a modern fictional carmaker, and a code like WZ26DETT suits a tuner story.
