Real game engines are named in a handful of recognizable ways, and copying the pattern matters more than the exact word. The most common is a single evocative noun that hints at power, light or raw material: the big engines lean on words for weather, fire, ice, stone and celestial bodies. The second is the plain 'X Engine' form, where X is a short, punchy word a studio can say in interviews without sounding silly. A third, mostly in-house, is the codename: a project word plus a version number, or a 'Tech' or 'Framework' suffix in the style of id Tech and MT Framework.

The names here follow those conventions. You will find single-word brands (Voxelforge, Kryolith, Tessera, Orbitron), 'Engine', 'Core' and 'Runtime' forms, 'Tech' codenames, and coined words with Latin or Greek bones that belong on a splash screen. Graphics jargon appears only when it doubles as a good word; nobody pitches an engine called Rasterizer.

When you choose, say the name in the sentence 'built on the ___ engine' and check it still sounds natural. Two- or three-syllable names survive logos, credits screens and repo URLs better than long ones, and a name ending in a hard consonant tends to feel more technical than one that trails off in a vowel.
