Crossbow Name Generator

A crossbow is the quiet, patient cousin of the sword, and its names should sound that way. Where blades get roaring titles, crossbows earn names about silence, certainty and the single shot: Heartseeker, the Quiet Argument, Last Word, Widow's Kiss. Medieval arbalests were feared enough that the Second Lateran Council tried to ban them against Christians in 1139, which is why so many good crossbow names borrow the language of judgement, penance and prayer (Iron Confessor, Bitter Psalm, Saint Ysolde's Reply).

The mechanism offers its own vocabulary. The latch, the string, the quarrel or bolt, the fletching and the crank all make natural name-parts: Stormlatch, Wolfstring, Quarrel of Kings, Hexfletch, Doomcrank. Bird names, especially hunting birds and shrikes, suit the weapon's stoop-and-strike character, and foreign words add pedigree: Italian balestra, German Armbrust, French arbalète, Spanish ballesta and Latin arcuballista all appear in the list.

Match the name to the build. A heavy siege arbalest wants weight (Ballista Minor, the Iron Verdict); a repeating crossbow wants something quick and chattering (Chorus of Bolts, Rattlesnake Repeater); a rogue's hand crossbow should sound small and intimate (Little Mercy, Sleeve Serpent, Courtier's Regret). Dwarf-made pieces take blunt clan names, elf-made ones take wind and moonlight.
