About female horse names

A mare is an adult female horse and a filly is a young one, and the names people give them have a recognizable style of their own. In the barn, mares tend to get short, friendly names that are easy to call across a paddock: Willow, Tilly, Bonnie, Nell, Dottie. Many end in -ie, -y or -a, and a good number are borrowed from a grandmother's generation (Mabel, Hattie, Winnie), which suits the steady older mare every yard seems to have.

Show and registered names run longer and lean on feminine signals: a title (Lady Rosalind, Her Ladyship, Grand Duchess), a flower (Briar Rose, Wild Orchid) or a phrase with some swing to it (Moonlit Belle, Pretty in Pink, She's a Keeper). Some breed registries also ask that a filly's name begin with the same letter as her dam's or her sire's, so read the rules before you fall for one.

This list leaves stallion and gelding names out. It is built from eleven styles: classic barn names, flowers, titles, show-ring phrases, terms from racing and the show ring that belong to mares (Boss Mare, Blue Hen, Triple Tiara), goddesses, heroines of legend and literature, coat and gem names, names from Spanish, French, Italian, Celtic and Arabic, cowgirl names and sweet pet names.

How to choose female horse names

  • Say the barn name out loud the way you would call it at feeding time. Two syllables with a bright vowel (Tilly, Bonnie, Cleo) carry farther across a field than a long phrase.
  • Pair a short barn name with a longer show name that contains it: Bella at home and Bella Notte in the ring, Bess in the field and Black Bess on the entry form.
  • Match the name to the mare in front of you. A quiet lead-line pony suits Maisie or Sweet Pea, while a bold mare with opinions can carry Calamity, Femme Fatale or Miss Demeanor.
  • For a breed with a home language, look there first: Estrella or Reina for an Andalusian, Étoile for a Selle Français, Najma or Zahra for an Arabian, Niamh for a Connemara.
  • Before you register a name, read your registry's rules on length, punctuation and repeats, and on whether a filly has to follow a set letter or her dam's line.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mare and a filly, and does it change the name?

A filly is a young female horse and a mare is an adult. Most riders draw the line at four years old, and racing draws it at five. The name stays the same when she grows up, so pick one that will still fit a full-grown broodmare: Baby Girl and Half Pint are sweet on a foal, while Duchess, Isolde and Lady Constance age better.

What are good names for a female horse?

For the barn, classics from this list include Daisy, Rosie, Ruby, Willow, Bella and Duchess. For the show ring, try a title, a flower or a phrase, such as Lady Rosalind, Briar Rose, Moonlit Belle or Queen of Hearts. The list is built around names that read feminine, so you can reroll freely without landing on a stallion's name.

Are there names here for a particular breed or coat color?

Yes. Amira, Najma and Zahra suit an Arabian mare, Estrella and Marisol suit the Spanish breeds, and Aisling or Maeve fit a Connemara or an Irish Draught. For color, try Ebony Rose or Black Velvet for a black mare, Silver Belle or Dapple Dawn for a gray, Honey Blonde or Palomina for a palomino, and Chestnut Belle or Cinnamon Girl for a chestnut.

Can I use these as registered or show names?

The longer entries are written in show-ring style and can work as registered names, but every registry sets its own limits on length, characters and names already in use, and you need to check those yourself. The Jockey Club, for example, limits a Thoroughbred's name to 18 characters, spaces included.
