Submarine names follow strict national traditions, which is exactly why they sound so authentic. The US Navy named its WWII fleet boats after fish and sea creatures: Wahoo, Barb, Tang, Sculpin, Archerfish. When nuclear boats arrived, attack submarines took city names (Los Angeles, Dallas, Key West) and later state names (Virginia, Texas), while ballistic missile boats were named for states and, in the Cold War 41 for Freedom fleet, for famous Americans (George Washington, Patrick Henry, Kamehameha). Japan's Sōryū class all end in -ryū, meaning dragon; France names hers for jewels and admirals.

Research submersibles have their own idiom: Alvin, Trieste, Deepsea Challenger, Limiting Factor. For fiction, either follow one of these national schemes precisely, or use the moody single-word register of thrillers and games: Undertow, Crush Depth, Grey Ghost, Silent Service.
