Star Trek Ship Name Generator

Star Trek ship names have a grammar of their own. Starfleet vessels carry the prefix USS (United Space Ship or United Star Ship, depending on which reference book you trust) and a registry number in the NCC series, or NX for experimental prototypes such as the Defiant NX-74205 and the Prometheus NX-59650. The names themselves follow real-navy tradition: historic ships (Enterprise, Constitution, Yorktown, Hood), explorers and scientists (Magellan, Cochrane, Curie, Hawking), astronauts (Gagarin, Armstrong, Tereshkova), stars and constellations (Antares, Rigel, Cygnus), rivers for runabouts (Ganges, Rio Grande, Yukon), and virtues (Intrepid, Valiant, Endeavour). Later ships in a lineage add letters: NCC-1701-A through -G for the Enterprise line.

Each major power names ships differently. Klingons use IKS (Imperial Klingon Ship) plus a Klingon word, a warrior's name, or a place of honor: IKS Rotarran, IKS Negh'Var, IKS Bortas, IKS Sto-Vo-Kor. Romulans use IRW (Imperial Romulan Warbird) with names like Khazara and Valdore. Cardassian ships take CDS, Ferengi ships FMS, Vulcan ships often carry apostrophes and the letter T (T'Plana-Hath, Ni'Var), and civilian or Earth freighters use SS, as in the SS Botany Bay and Kobayashi Maru.

The list below mixes canon vessels with original names built on the same rules, so a Starfleet Academy RPG ship, a fan-fiction hero vessel, or a Star Trek Online character can sound like it belongs in the fleet.
