Sherlock Holmes Name Generator
Holmesian names for detectives, clients and villains
Generate Sherlock Holmes character names in the manner of Conan Doyle's stories: Inspector Algernon Pryke, Miss Violet Carstairs, Dr. Septimus Holroyd and Count Ottokar von Reiss, plus a small share of the canon cast, for pastiches, mystery games and role-play.
About Sherlock Holmes names
Arthur Conan Doyle named the people of the Sherlock Holmes stories to a pattern you can hear at once: an uncommon, often biblical or antique first name set on a plain English surname. Jabez Wilson, Mordecai Smith, Josiah Amberley and Silas Brown all work that way. Just as important is the handle in front. Holmes's world runs on rank and role, so almost everyone arrives as Inspector, Colonel, Dr., Miss, Sir or Count, and several travel under an alias.
This list has 1,000 names built on those habits. About one in ten are Conan Doyle's own characters, among them Mr. Sherlock Holmes, Dr. John H. Watson, Inspector Lestrade, Professor James Moriarty and Miss Irene Adler. The rest are original names written in the same manner, such as Inspector Algernon Pryke, Miss Violet Carstairs and Colonel Barnaby Moreham.
The originals cover the stock company of a late Victorian case: consulting detectives and their rivals, Scotland Yard men, doctors and old army comrades, clients and governesses, squires and baronets, master criminals, returned colonials and American visitors, continental nobles using an alias, landladies, pageboys and street Irregulars, tradesmen, servants, clergy and sea captains. The canon names come from Conan Doyle's stories, not from later pastiches or screen versions.
How to choose Sherlock Holmes names
- Lead with the role. A title such as Inspector, Colonel or Miss tells the reader where a character stands before the story does, which is how Dr. Septimus Holroyd and Squire Jeremiah Hollings earn their place.
- Pair a rare first name with a plain surname rather than the other way round. Ephraim, Hosea and Septimus sound right on Tollard, Vellacott and Holroyd because the surname stays quiet.
- Give a visitor from abroad an alias with a reason behind it. Count Emil von Falkenried, alias Captain Falconer, suggests a secret errand in a single line.
- For street informants and criminals, add a nickname or a trade: 'Sparrow' Tibbs of the Irregulars and Silas Crabbe, the Lambeth Coiner, need no further introduction.
- If you are writing your own story, pick from the original names and keep the canon ones for reference, since Holmes, Watson and Moriarty bring their own history with them.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound Holmesian?
Three things: an old-fashioned first name, a plain English surname, and a rank or role in front. Conan Doyle's Mr. Jabez Wilson and Mr. Culverton Smith follow the pattern, and so do originals in this list such as Inspector Algernon Pryke and Miss Violet Carstairs.
Are these names from the Sherlock Holmes stories?
About one in ten are Conan Doyle's own characters, including Mr. Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Mycroft Holmes, Mrs. Hudson, Colonel Sebastian Moran and Inspector Tobias Gregson. The other names are original and written in the same style. None of the canon share comes from later pastiches, films or television series.
Can I use these names in my own mystery or game?
The original names are meant for that: pastiches, tabletop mysteries, murder mystery parties and role-play characters. Use a canon name only when you want the reader to think of Conan Doyle's character. This page is a fan resource and has no connection with the Conan Doyle Estate or any screen adaptation.
Why do so many of the names have titles or aliases?
Because the stories do. Clients are introduced as Mr., Miss or Dr., retired officers keep their rank, and several visitors hide behind another name. Entries like Colonel Barnaby Moreham and Count Maximilian von Hartenfels, alias Mr. Hart, follow that habit.
