Murder mystery names do a job before the story starts: they tell the reader who belongs at the country house, who is staff, who is a foreigner the locals distrust, and who the author wants you to underestimate. Agatha Christie's casts set the template – Colonel Arbuthnot, Mrs. Hubbard, Lady Westholme, Dr. Constantine – with titles and professions carried right into the name because a character's social position is a clue. Golden-age detective fiction leans on old English surnames that sound like places (Ravenscroft, Pemberton, Trelawney), Latinate first names for the gentry (Augustus, Cordelia, Percival), and plain first names for the servants (Ellen the parlour maid, Peters the gamekeeper).

A good murder mystery name is distinct at a glance from every other name in the cast. Christie never gives two suspects similar first names, and neither should you: vary the first letters, syllable counts and titles so that a guest reading a character sheet or a reader thirty chapters in never confuses the vicar with the valet.
