Generate serval names built on what sets this cat apart: ear and hearing names like Radar and Satellite, long-leg names like Stilts, leap names like Pogo and Liftoff, wetland names like Papyrus and Kafue, and labeled words such as Mondo (Swahili: serval).

About serval names

A serval is built around three things, and most good serval names come from one of them: the ears, the legs and the jump. The ears are huge for the size of the head, and a serval hunts mainly by sound, standing still in tall grass until it has placed a rodent it cannot see. That gives Radar, Satellite, Earshot and Decibel. The legs are the longest of any cat relative to body size, which gives Stilts, Beanpole and High Pockets, and the hunt ends in a high, arcing pounce: Pogo, Hang Time, Liftoff.

Servals live across sub-Saharan Africa and keep close to water, in reed beds, marshes and wet grassland more than on dry open plains. So the list uses wetland plants and birds (Papyrus, Bulrush, Jacana, Hamerkop) and African rivers, lakes and swamps such as Kafue, Bangweulu and the Sudd. Words from African languages show their language and meaning in the name, for example Mondo (Swahili: serval) and Tierboskat (Afrikaans: serval).

The rest covers the golden coat with its bars and spots, dark names for black servals, elegant names that suit a Savannah cat, the domestic breed that began with serval crosses, funny titles, and pairs for siblings. The names suit zoo and sanctuary animals, story and game characters, toys and tall, spotted house cats.

How to choose serval names

  • Start from the feature you notice first. Big ears point to Radar, Dish or Antenna, long legs to Stilts, Lanky or Tall Socks, and a jumper to Pogo, Vault or Liftoff.
  • Use water rather than plains for place names. Kafue, Linyanti, Naivasha and Rufiji fit a cat of reed beds and marshes better than a desert does.
  • If you pick a glossed word, call the animal by the bare word and keep the gloss for the sign or the character sheet. Sikio, Ruka and Matete are easy to say, and the label tells people the language.
  • For siblings, take a ready pair such as Radar & Sonar, Reed & Rush or Dawn & Dusk, or choose two names from one group, for example two wetland birds like Jacana and Egret.
  • A Savannah cat can carry either kind of name: something elegant like Seraphine or Odette, or a nod to its wild relative like Little Serval or Servaline.

Frequently asked questions

What is a serval called in Swahili and Afrikaans?

The Swahili word is mondo and the Afrikaans word is tierboskat. Both are in the list with the language shown, as Mondo (Swahili: serval) and Tierboskat (Afrikaans: serval), next to everyday words such as Sikio (Swahili: ear) and Riet (Afrikaans: reed).

What are good names for a black serval?

A melanistic serval is black all over, sometimes with faint spots showing in the dark coat, so ink and night names fit: Inkwell, Soot, Lampblack, New Moon, Ghost Spots and Silhouette. Aberdare and Kilimanjaro are in the list because black servals have been reported in the East African highlands.

Can I use these names for a Savannah cat or another pet?

Yes. A Savannah cat is a domestic breed that began with serval crosses, and names like Savvy, Savoy, Stilts and Tall Socks suit one well. The ear, leg and jump names also fit any lanky, big-eared cat or dog.

Are any of the names from anime or games?

No name is taken from a series on purpose. A small group is written for anime-style and game characters: Japanese words with the meaning shown, such as Mimi (Japanese: ears) and Yamaneko (Japanese: wildcat), and epithets like Marshstalker and Skyleaper. They have no connection with any series or game, and we did not compare them with one.
