Generate jaguar names from the cat's own range: words for jaguar such as Balam, Yaguareté and Onça, wetlands and reserves like Pantanal and Calakmul, and rosette, river, storm, cub and mascot names such as Rosette, Riverbend and Little Thunder.

About jaguar names

The jaguar is the largest cat of the Americas, ranging from Mexico to northern Argentina, and the people who share that range named it long before any zoo did. Balam is the Yucatec Maya word for jaguar, ocelotl the Nahuatl one and yaguareté the Guarani one. Quechua uturunku became otorongo in Peruvian Spanish, nahuel is the Mapuche word, Brazilians say onça or onça-pintada, and across Spanish America the cat is often simply el tigre. All of them are in the list.

The rest of the 1,000 names follow the animal itself. Its coat is gold with dark rosettes, which gives Rosette, Topaz and Gold Dust. It is a stocky cat with a very strong bite and a habit of swimming, hence Ironjaw, Prowl, Riverbend and Caiman. Place names come only from jaguar country: Pantanal, Calakmul, Xingu, Iberá, Madidi and many more rivers, wetlands and reserves.

Spanish and Portuguese words (Sombra, Relámpago, Trovão), forest plants and neighbors (Ceiba, Tuiuiú), storm and night names, soft cub names (Pipoca, Flan) and mascot names round out the list. Black jaguars exist, but shadow names are a small share here because the panther page is built on them.

How to choose jaguar names

  • Start with the cat's own names: Balam, Nahuel, Otorongo and Yaguareté are short, easy to say and mean jaguar in a language of its range.
  • Match the place to the story: a wetland jaguar suits Pantanal, Piquiri or Iberá, while a Maya-forest character suits Calakmul or Petén.
  • Say the name aloud. Keepers and children will use it every day, so Onça, Selva or Ember will outlast a long place name such as Chiribiquete.
  • For a pair of cubs, pick two names from one group: Trueno and Relámpago, Sol Poente and Lua Cheia, or Paçoca and Pipoca.
  • A word from a living Indigenous language deserves care: before you put one on a mascot or a brand, ask speakers or a community organization how it is used.

Frequently asked questions

What is a jaguar called in the languages of its range?

Balam in Yucatec Maya, ocelotl in Nahuatl, yaguareté in Guarani, uturunku in Quechua (otorongo in Peruvian Spanish) and nahuel in Mapudungun, the Mapuche language. Portuguese speakers say onça or onça-pintada, and Spanish speakers from Mexico to Argentina often just say el tigre.

What do Ix, Tecuani, Yo'oko, Canguçu and Tigre Mariposo mean?

Ix is the jaguar day sign of the Maya calendar. Tecuani is a Nahuatl word for a fierce wild beast that has long been used for the jaguar, and Yo'oko is the Yaqui word for the cat. Canguçu is a Brazilian regional name for the jaguar, and Tigre Mariposo is a name for it in the Llanos of Venezuela and Colombia.

Are any of these names from real jaguars?

A few. El Jefe, Macho B and Yo'oko were wild jaguars recorded in southern Arizona, at the northern edge of the range. The rest of the list is words, places and character-style names, though any zoo may of course have used one of them.

What are good names for a jaguar cub?

Short, soft names work well while the cub is small: Oncinha, Tigrito, Pipoca, Paçoca, Flan or Little Thunder. A word or a place from the cat's range, such as Nahuel, Selva or Xingu, is another option and still suits the adult.
