About cheetah names

Cheetah names almost always point at one of three things: where the cat comes from, how fast it is, or what its coat looks like. Because wild cheetahs live mostly in East and southern Africa, zoos and sanctuaries reach for Swahili first. Duma means cheetah, Haraka means fast, Upepo is wind, Umeme is lightning, Kasi is speed, plus everyday names like Zuri, Amani and Jabari. Other African languages give Lengau (Setswana), Ingulule (Zulu) and Dindingwe (Shona), and the word cheetah itself comes from Hindi chita, meaning spotted; Arabic Fahd and Persian Yuz cover the Asiatic cheetah.

Speed names are the second pool, and cheetahs earn them: Bolt, Dash, Blitz, Sprint, Zephyr, Sirocco, Mistral, Slipstream and Tailwind all read as cheetah names before anything else; Fuli, the cheetah in The Lion Guard, is Swahili for very fast. Coat names come from the tawny ground colour and solid black spots (Tawny, Amber, Saffron, Speckle, Domino, Inkblot) and from the black tear marks under the eyes (Teardrop, Kohl, Mascara).

This generator mixes those with African place names like Serengeti, Kalahari and Okavango, mythological runners like Atalanta and Hermes, famous real cheetahs such as Sarah of Cincinnati Zoo, and cute names for cubs for zoo animals, story characters, toys and very fast pets.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the language to the subspecies: Swahili or Setswana for an African cheetah, Persian or Arabic (Yuz, Fahd, Pirouz) for an Asiatic cheetah. One authentic word does more than a whole sentence of description.
  • Lean into speed rather than strength. Bolt, Dash, Sirocco and Slipstream suit a cheetah; Brutus or Tank does not. Wind names from around the world (Harmattan, Chinook, Khamsin) are a fresh take if Bolt feels overused.
  • For cubs, use the mantle: young cheetahs have a silvery mohawk of fur down their backs, so Mohawk, Mantle, Tuft, Wisp and Fuzz are accurate as well as cute.
  • Coat names work for both sexes. Tawny, Amber, Saffron and Honey describe the ground colour, Domino, Inkblot and Speckle the spots, and Teardrop or Kohl the black tear stripes that cheetahs have and leopards do not.
  • If you are naming siblings (cheetah litters are often three to five cubs), pick one theme: all winds (Zephyr, Gale, Mistral), all Swahili virtues (Amani, Imani, Neema) or all places (Mara, Tsavo, Meru).

Frequently asked questions

What is cheetah in Swahili and other African languages?

Cheetah is Duma in Swahili, Lengau in Setswana and Sesotho, Ingulule in Zulu, Dindingwe in Shona and Jagluiperd (hunting leopard) in Afrikaans. Related Swahili words that make good names are Haraka (fast), Kasi (speed), Mbio (running), Upepo (wind) and Umeme (lightning).

What are some famous cheetah names?

Sarah, a Cincinnati Zoo cheetah, set the record for the fastest 100 metres by a land animal in 2012. Pirouz was the much-loved Asiatic cheetah cub born in Iran in 2022. In fiction there are Fuli from The Lion Guard, Cheetara from ThunderCats, Cheetor from Beast Wars and Duma, the title cheetah of the 2005 film.

What are good names for a cheetah cub?

Small and quick names suit cubs: Pip, Twig, Sprout, Pebbles, Zip, Skip, Scoot and Pounce. Names from a cub's silvery back fur, such as Mohawk, Mantle, Tuft and Wisp, are a nice detail, and Swahili Kito (precious) or Zawadi (gift) work well for a birth announcement.

Can I use these names for a cat, dog or other pet that is fast?

Yes. Speed names like Bolt, Dash, Blitz, Comet and Turbo are already popular for greyhounds, whippets and energetic kittens, and spot names like Domino, Freckles and Speckle fit any spotted or ticked animal from a Bengal cat to a Dalmatian.
