About sandwing names

SandWings are the pale gold, barb-tailed dragons of the Kingdom of Sand in Tui T. Sutherland's Wings of Fire, ruled from the Stronghold by Queen Thorn after the War of SandWing Succession between Blister, Blaze and Burn. Canon SandWings include Sunny, Thorn, Qibli, Smolder, Oasis, Six-Claws, Ostrich, Addax, Camel, Dune, Jerboa, Meerkat, Onyx, Palm, Prickle, Rattlesnake, Sandstorm, Scorpion, Sirocco, Tawny, Vulture, Viper, Cobra and Quicksand. Almost all are single English words for something found in a hot desert: a creature, a cactus or thornbush, a wind, a landform, a sandy color or the heat itself.

The tribe has a few distinct registers. Royals and the old nobility lean toward grand, precious or scorching words (Oasis, Onyx, Blaze, Burn, Blister, Smolder); soldiers and outlaws get venomous animals and rough terrain (Rattlesnake, Scorpion, Sidewinder, Quicksand, Vulture); Scorpion Den dragons and ordinary SandWings carry humbler desert creatures and plants (Jerboa, Meerkat, Ostrich, Cactus, Prickle, Palm); and Qibli's name, Arabic for the hot southern wind, shows that real desert wind names like Sirocco, Khamsin, Haboob and Harmattan are fair game. Heat words overlap slightly with SkyWings, so lean on desert references when the tribe should be obvious.

Every name here is a single word or short creature name, matching canon, so it drops straight into fanfiction, roleplay or an OC sheet.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the word to the dragon's station: gold, gems and fire (Onyx, Citrine, Blaze, Scald) for royalty and nobles, venomous creatures and hazards (Sidewinder, Deathstalker, Quicksand, Haboob) for fighters and outlaws, and humble desert plants and animals (Jerboa, Cholla, Sandgrouse) for commoners and Scorpion Den dragons.
  • Go specific. Sand, Desert or Hot sound invented; Ocotillo, Vinegaroon, Fennec, Mesquite and Simoom sound like they belong in the books and are almost never taken on roleplay servers.
  • Check the canon list before naming an OC: Sunny, Thorn, Qibli, Smolder, Blister, Blaze, Burn, Oasis, Six-Claws, Ostrich, Addax, Camel, Dune, Jerboa, Meerkat, Onyx, Palm, Prickle, Rattlesnake, Sandstorm, Scorpion, Sirocco, Tawny, Vulture, Viper and Cobra all belong to established characters.
  • Watch the tribe borders. Pure fire words (Ember, Flame, Cinder) and red colors read SkyWing, Sahara-style oases with lagoons read SeaWing, and rainforest creatures read RainWing, so save those for hybrids or border-raised dragons.
  • For a SandWing hybrid, pick a word that fits both tribes: Scorch or Inferno for a SandWing-SkyWing, Tortoise or Cactus Wren for a SandWing-MudWing, Cobra or Nightjar for a SandWing-NightWing.

Frequently asked questions

How are SandWings named in Wings of Fire?

SandWings take single-word names from the desert: animals (Jerboa, Meerkat, Addax, Scorpion, Vulture, Rattlesnake), plants (Saguaro, Agave, Cactus, Palm, Prickle), sand and landforms (Dune, Oasis, Quicksand, Horizon), hot winds (Sirocco, Qibli, Sandstorm), sandy colors (Tawny, Onyx) and heat or fire words (Sunny, Blaze, Burn, Blister, Smolder, Scald).

Which SandWing names are already canon characters?

The best known are Sunny, Thorn, Qibli, Smolder, Oasis, Blister, Blaze, Burn, Six-Claws, Ostrich, Addax, Armadillo, Camel, Dune, Jerboa, Meerkat, Onyx, Palm, Prickle, Rattlesnake, Sandstorm, Scorpion, Sirocco, Tawny, Vulture, Viper, Cobra and Quicksand. They appear here for completeness, but choose something else for an original character.

Can a SandWing have a fire or heat name?

Yes. Blaze, Burn, Blister, Smolder and Scald are all canon SandWings, so sun and heat words are firmly in the tribe's territory. Only pure flame imagery like Ember, Flame and Peril tends to read SkyWing; if in doubt, tie the name to sun or sand rather than fire.

Do these names work for desert dragons outside Wings of Fire?

They do. Because each entry is an evocative desert word, the list suits a brass dragon in D&D, a sand wyrm in an original novel, or any heat-dwelling dragon character, not only Wings of Fire roleplay.
