Generate Roald Dahl names: characters from the books such as Willy Wonka, Veruca Salt and Miss Trunchbull, then new names in the same style, from Rupert Grabbit and Aunt Vinegar to the giant Chimneytoppler and a bag of Hiccup Humbugs.

About Roald Dahl names

The invented names in Roald Dahl's books tell you the vice before the character speaks. A child or a grown-up gets an ordinary first name and a surname that is a small insult or a sound: Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Mike Teavee, Miss Trunchbull, Mr. and Mrs. Twit. The giants of The BFG are job descriptions run together (Fleshlumpeater, Bonecruncher), and the sweets, foods and creatures are gleeful nonsense (Everlasting Gobstopper, snozzcumber, Vermicious Knids).

The list opens with names from the books, grouped by book, with the Chocolate Factory cast first. A few names that exist only in the 1971, 2005 or 2023 films carry the film's year. It is a reference block, not a full index of every book.

The rest is new and follows the same rules: greedy, bossy and smug children (Rupert Grabbit, Prunella Sulk), beastly teachers, aunts and farmers (Aunt Vinegar, Farmer Skimp), kindly grown-ups (Miss Marigold), giants (Chimneytoppler), witches with committee titles, talking animals, sweets and fizzy inventions (Hiccup Humbugs), nonsense words (Snibberwhiffle), and factory rooms, villages and shops. The new names tease a habit, never the way someone looks. This is a fan page with no tie to the Roald Dahl Story Company or to any film studio.

How to choose Roald Dahl names

  • Name the habit, not the person. Pick the fault first (greed, boasting, sulking, telling tales) and then find a word that sounds like it: Guzzle, Braggley, Sulk, Tattle.
  • Keep the first name ordinary and a little old-fashioned. Humphrey, Prunella, Nigel and Mabel make the surname funnier because they sound so respectable.
  • Give grown-up villains a title and a bare surname. Miss Grimthorpe, Aunt Prickle and Farmer Grudge keep the reader at a distance, the way Miss Trunchbull and Aunt Spiker do.
  • Build a giant from a thing and what the giant does to it: Roofrattler, Pondgulper, Haystackhurler. One long word with no space reads best.
  • Say nonsense words out loud. The good ones are made of real noises (fizz, wobble, snort, whizz) with one invented part, like Wobblefizz and Drumblesnort.

Frequently asked questions

Which names in this list come from the books?

The first 134 entries, grouped by book: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory first, then Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG, Matilda, The Twits, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Witches and several shorter books. An entry with a year in parentheses, such as Mr. Turkentine (1971 film), is a character or a form of a name found only on screen. The block is a reference, not a complete index.

What are the Willy Wonka character names?

The main cast of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is Willy Wonka, Charlie Bucket, Grandpa Joe and the four other ticket winners: Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde and Mike Teavee. The rival candy makers are Slugworth, Prodnose and Fickelgruber. Names for the factory workers have a page of their own, the Oompa Loompa name generator.

How do I make up a name in the Dahl style?

Pair a plain first name with a surname that names a bad habit or makes a rude little noise. Humphrey Guzzle, Tabitha Tattle and Nigel Smirk all follow the pattern of Augustus Gloop and Bruce Bogtrotter. For kind characters do the opposite and pick something warm and simple, such as Miss Marigold or Grandma Rosie.

Are the nonsense words from The BFG?

Five are. Snozzcumber, frobscottle, phizzwizard, trogglehumper and scrumdiddlyumptious are the giant's own words and sit with the other names from that book. The rest, such as Snibberwhiffle, Wobblefizz and Tumblewhump, are new coinages in the same spirit, often called gobblefunk.
