About children's book names

Children's book titles do a very specific job: a parent reads them aloud in a shop or library, and a child decides in about two seconds whether the book looks fun. Stomp!), and onomatopoeia all make a title easy to say and easy to remember. Most picture book titles run three to seven words and put a character name or a concrete noun near the front.

The common shapes are easy to spot once you look for them. Character-plus-problem titles (Rory Can't Stop Roaring) promise a story with a lesson inside. Bedtime titles favor soft, sleepy words and often open with Goodnight or Hush. Question titles (Where Does the Wind Sleep?) suit curious preschoolers and nonfiction-flavored books. Concept books for the youngest readers use counting or colors (Ten Tiny Turtles, Hello, Yellow). Chapter books for older kids lean on a place or a mystery: The Secret of Puddle Lane, The Library Under the Lake.

A good title also tells you the age range. Short, bouncy, and silly signals ages two to five; a longer title with a place name or a twist of wit signals six and up. Match the title's rhythm to the reader you have in mind.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Read every candidate aloud. If it trips your tongue, a parent reading it for the fortieth time will hate it; if it bounces, a child will ask for it by name.
  • Put the hook early: the character name, the funny animal, or the problem should be in the first three words so it survives a thumbnail cover image.
  • Alliteration and rhyme are great, but use them on purpose. One strong sound pattern per title is memorable; two start to feel like a tongue-twister.
  • Check Amazon, Goodreads, and your library catalog before committing. Titles cannot be copyrighted, but a duplicate of a well-known book will bury yours in search results.
  • Bedtime books sell on calm: favor soft consonants and words like hush, moon, snuggle, and goodnight rather than exclamation marks.

Should I put the main character's name in the title?
