Generate Chinese river names for maps, stories and campaigns: real rivers such as Chang Jiang (长江, the Yangtze) and Jialing Jiang, original pinyin names with characters and a gloss like Bishui He (碧水河, jade-green water), and English names such as Jade Dragon River and Sword-Washing Creek.

About Chinese river names

A Chinese river name is a short describing element followed by a word for the kind of water. He (河) is the usual word in the north, as in Huang He, the Yellow River. Jiang (江) is commoner in the south and the northeast, as in Chang Jiang, the Yangtze. Shui (水) is the older word of the classics, xi (溪) is a stream, gou (沟) a gully and qu (渠) a canal. Because that word is part of the name, write Wei He or the Wei River, never Wei He River.

The 1,000 names come in three forms. Two hundred twenty-six are real rivers and canals, each followed by its characters and a place or an English name, such as Fen He (汾河, Shanxi). A few rivers of Tibet, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia keep their own names. Most of the rest are originals in pinyin with characters and a literal gloss of their meaning, such as Bishui He (碧水河, jade-green water). About one name in five is in English, like Jade Dragon River.

The originals follow real habits: colors, minerals, animals, plants, weather, numbers, good wishes, village streams named for a family, and rivers of myth and the martial world. These patterns are common, so an original may well match a real stream.

How to choose Chinese river names

  • Match the word to the water and the region. He suits a northern or dry-country river, jiang a big southern one, xi a clear hill stream, gou a gully that may run dry, and qu or yunhe a channel dug by people.
  • Do not say river twice. He, jiang, shui and xi already mean river or stream, so write Qingtan Xi or Blue Pool Stream, not Qingtan Xi Stream.
  • Name a river system the way real ones are named: one trunk in jiang or he, then tributaries in xi, jian and gou. A wuxia valley could have Dujie Jiang fed by Xijian Xi and Longyin Jian.
  • Copy the characters along with the pinyin. Different characters share one spelling, which is why the list holds two real rivers written Min Jiang and two written Wei He. For anything that matters, confirm the characters with a dictionary or a Chinese speaker.
  • Search a name before you publish it. Plain names such as Baisha He or Sancha He follow patterns used all over China, and the glosses are literal readings of the characters, not local histories.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between he, jiang, shui and xi?

All four name running water. He (河) is the commonest word for a river in northern China and jiang (江) in the south and the northeast, which is why the list has Fen He and Liao He but Xiang Jiang and Songhua Jiang. Shui (水) is the older word used in the classics, as in Yi Shui, and xi (溪) is a stream, as in Jiuqu Xi, the Nine Bends of Wuyi Shan.

Are these real Chinese rivers?

Two hundred twenty-six are, and each of those is followed by a place or an English name, for example Qiantang Jiang (钱塘江, Zhejiang) and Heilong Jiang (黑龙江, the Amur). Three more, such as Wangchuan, are rivers of myth and say so. Names followed by a gloss of their meaning, such as Luoyan Jiang (落雁江, alighting wild geese), and the English names are originals. Their patterns are common, so some will match a real stream that we have not looked up.

Why does the list have two rivers called Min Jiang?

Both are real. The Min Jiang of Sichuan is written 岷江 and the Min Jiang of Fujian is written 闽江, and the two characters share one pinyin spelling. The same goes for Han Jiang, Wei He and a few others, so each real river carries its characters and a place.

Can I use these names for a wuxia or fantasy map?

Yes. Names such as Dujie Jiang (渡劫江, tribulation-crossing river), Spirit Vein River, Sword-Washing Creek and River of Ten Thousand Lanterns were written with those settings in mind, and the plainer ones suit historical fiction and games. The list names rivers, streams and canals only, so the towns, bridges and ferries along them are yours to name.
