Reggae names for solo artists, bands and sound systems, from titled stage names like Lady Meridian and King Tamarind to band names like The Riverstone Players, Dub Almanac and Steady Tide Sound. The 500 names cover roots, dub, rocksteady, lovers rock and dancehall.

About reggae names

Reggae stage names grew out of the Jamaican sound system, the mobile set of speakers and turntables that played records at outdoor dances in Kingston from the 1950s. Operators and deejays gave themselves grand titles, which is how the music got Duke Reid, Sir Coxsone, Prince Buster, Count Machuki and King Tubby. In Jamaican usage the deejay is the vocalist who talks over the rhythm, and the selector is the one who picks the records. Close to half of this list follows that tradition, pairing a title such as King, Prince, Lady, Sister, Junior or Little with a second word made up for this page: King Tamarind, Sister Juniper, Junior Riptide.

The rest are names for groups. Roots bands lean on rivers, lions, steel and sunrise (The Riverstone Players, Morning Lion Band). Dub acts name the studio itself, with echo, tape and reverb (Spring Reverb Society). Rocksteady, the slower style that followed ska in the mid 1960s, favored harmony groups with neat plural names (The Harbortones), and lovers rock, the romantic style that took shape in London in the 1970s, goes soft and sweet (Tender Tide). There are also dancehall handles, sound system names ending in Hi-Fi or Sound, and studio bands.

The list leaves out the titles of the Rastafari faith and its names for God.

How to choose reggae names

  • Match the title to the role. King, Duke, Sir and Count suit a selector or a producer, Junior and Little suit a young singer, and Sister, Brother, Lady and Queen sit well on roots and lovers rock vocalists.
  • Say the name the way an MC would introduce it over a rhythm. Short second words with a strong first beat, as in Prince Kestrel or Captain Rewind, carry better over a loud system than long ones.
  • Let the ending describe the lineup. Hi-Fi, Sound and Sound System mean a crew with speakers and records, Players, Band and All-Stars mean musicians, and a plural such as The Cedar Tones suggests a harmony group.
  • Titled names are a living tradition and many are in use by working artists. Search streaming services and social platforms for any name before you put it on a flyer or a release.
  • Pick the style before the name. A dub project can carry a dry technical name like Dub Seismograph, while a lovers rock act wants something warmer, such as Sugar Apple Serenade.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound like reggae?

Mostly the form. A title in front of one vivid word, as in "Lady Meridian" or "Duke Harbor", follows the habit of the early sound system operators. For groups, the cues are words from the music itself, such as roots, riddim, dub, steppers and one drop, plus plain images of rivers, hills, sun and sea.

What is the difference between a deejay name and a selector name?

In reggae the deejay is the vocalist who chats or toasts over the rhythm, and the selector chooses and plays the records. Deejay names tend to be boastful or playful, like "Mighty Marlin" or "Fast Chat Fitzroy". The list also has plain role names such as "Selector Brightwater" and "Operator Starling" for the people behind the turntables.

Does the list include sound system names?

Yes. Names such as "Brightwater Hi-Fi", "Lantern Hill Sound System" and "Steady Tide Sound" follow the usual endings for a sound system. There are also studio band names, such as "The Tin Roof Session Men" and "The Backroom All-Stars", for backing bands and house bands.

Can I use one of these names for a real act?

You can, but do your own search first. The names were drafted for this page and have not been compared with the names of working artists, bands or sound systems. Look the name up on streaming services, social platforms and in your local scene before you commit to it.
